Here are some easy new ways to amp up the beauty benefits of your cleansers, fragrances and skincare products – giving you more bang for your buck. Use these “beauty boosters” to customize products to meet your needs.

Add Exfoliating Power to Your Cleanser

What: Facial cleansing powders

How to use them: When combined with water, they transform into a face wash that doubles as an exfoliator.

Our picks: Rodin Olio Lusso Facial Cleansing Powder ($45, oliolusso.com) and Biore Baking Soda Pore Cleanser ($5, drugstores).

Do-it-yourself: Add 1/2 teaspoon baking soda to your facial cleanser to create a mild exfoliant, said Samantha Cooper, spa director at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, Massachusetts.

Lab lowdown: You can tailor these to your complexion’s needs. “Adding more water to the powder makes the formula gentler, while using less water makes it more exfoliating,” says GH Beauty Lab senior chemist Sabina Wizemann.

Personalize Your Perfume

What: Fragrance filters

How to use them: Dab on these undiluted perfume oils before applying your go-to scent.

Our picks: Maison Margiela Replica Filter in “Glow” and “Blur” ($55 each, Sephora).

Do-it-yourself: For a similar effect, apply an essential oil before you spritz. Citrus oils add freshness, and woodsy ones add warmth, says Sylvie Ganter, co-founder of Atelier Cologne.

Lab lowdown: These fragrance filters create unique “new” scents by enhancing the ones you already own.

Boost a Moisturizer’s Anti-Aging Factor

What: Skincare booster drops

How to use them: Add concentrated ingredients to products for youth-boosting benefits.

Our picks: Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Clinical Concentrate Booster Set ($58,

sephora.com) and Clarins Booster Repair ($39, clarinsusa.com).

Lab lowdown: “Ingredient ‘shots’ claim to infuse creams and lotions with treatment effects like hydration and brightening,” said Good Housekeeping Beauty Lab chemist Danusia Wnek. “But there’s no way to know how they’ll affect the efficacy of the various formulas you’re adding them to.”

ON ANOTHER MATTER …

The Top Sunscreen Lotion

Experts agree the best SPF is one you want to use (over and over!). Here is the winning formula that works – and that you’ll love.

Kiehl’s Activated Sun Protector Water-Light Lotion for Face and Body SPF 50 ($29, kiehls.com): Despite its lotion form, lightweight, fragrance-free Kiehl’s ranked above the rest for not making skin greasy or sticky and for soaking in quickly.

Tester notes: “It didn’t feel like sunscreen at all,” one said. “There was no chalky look or sweaty feel – it’s the best I’ve ever tried,” another reported. It had a cooling effect, too.

Lab lowdown: Consumer results showed that it effectively protected skin even while testers were by the pool, on the beach, swimming or doing other outdoor exercise.

The Best Spray-On Sunscreen

Need sun protection in a hurry? Try our Beauty Lab’s top pick.

Banana Boat SunComfort Clear UltraMist Sunscreen SPF 50, $8: The top mist of the test, sheer Banana Boat earned the highest marks on many fronts: great texture, absorption, not leaving residue or feeling tacky, not rubbing off or staining and rinsing off easily.

Tester notes: It went on effortlessly, and its slightly sweet, fruity scent was a favorite. “I’ll continue to use this,” a tester said.

Lab lowdown: Users rated it well for preventing sunburn during a range of outdoor activities.

PRODUCT/VEHICLE

PROBLEM

Honeywell SWIFT wireless gateway, sold with Honeywell fire alarm systems. The fire alarm systems were sold at Honeywell distributors nationwide between October 2014 and December 2016 for about $440.

The smoke detectors connected to the gateway can fail to activate properly when significant environmental contaminants are present, posing a risk that consumers will not be alerted to a fire. Consumers and businesses should contact Honeywell for an update of the firmware on the SWIFT wireless gateway(s) installed on the system. Commercial building customers should continue using the recalled detectors until the firmware is updated. Honeywell can be reached at (800) 289-3473 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST Monday through Friday or online at http://hwll.co/CPSCsafety. Click on “Safety Recall” for more information.

Porsche 2015-2016 Macan S and Macan Turbo and 2017 Macan GTS

The passenger occupant detection sensor mat may fail in the front passenger seat, deactivating the front passenger air bag. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208, “Occupant Crash Protection.” In the event of a

crash, if the front passenger air bag does not deploy as intended, the front passenger has an increased risk of injury. Porsche will notify owners, and dealers will replace the sensor mat and seat cushion for free. Owners may contact Porsche customer service at (800) 767-7243. Porsche’s number for this recall is AH02.
