For civic leaders in early 20th century Chicago, few issues seemed as vexing as the city’s grid. In a rapidly growing and increasingly diverse city, the grid appeared to constrain every best effort to build a cohesive community. In this talk, Shiben Banerji examines how three architects — Daniel Burnham, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Marion Mahony Griffin—each defined the problem of the grid. Lyrics and Lyricism: Voice and Violin Music

The violin and the human voice have traditionally represented the height of soloist expression. How did the dawn of 20th century musical modernism change composers’ approach to these beautiful instruments? Oak Park and River Forest natives Emily Dorian and Scott Daniel will present an eclectic program exploring this question, featuring small ensemble and solo works by Saint-Saëns, Schoenberg, Villa-Lobos and others.

For this architecture walking tour, participants will step inside magnificent lobbies, corridors and the underground Pedway system for an in-depth, personal approach to a Chicago architecture walking tour downtown.
