Library to present therapy dog program

The Schaumburg Township Central Library, 130 S. Roselle Road, will present Pet Away Your Stress, a program for adults (ages 18 and older) with high-functioning Asperger’s Syndrome and others facing social challenges, from 7-8 p.m. Feb. 9 in Program Room 2. Representatives from Therapy Dogs, Inc. will be on hand, and attendees are invited to

Alsip

Village to host job fair at park district site

The village, in cooperation with the Alsip Park District, will host its third annual, two-day Resume Review and Job Fair from 8-10 p.m. Feb. 9 and from 4-8 p.m. Feb. 16 at Apollo Park, 12521 S. Kostner Ave. The goal of this free event is to connect Alsip businesses with residents in the community. The first day of the program (Resume Review) will allow job seekers to get advice from area human resources professionals on how to update their resumes, as well as how to properly format a resume for maximum results. One week later, the Job Fair will provide applicants with the opportunity to meet representatives of Alsip businesses looking to fill open positions. Participants should bring a pen and copies of their resumes, and business dress is highly recommended. To register, call (708) 389-1003. Grant program to provide water bill assistance

The village announced that the Community Economic Development Association (CEDA) of Cook County’s Service Block Grant Program is offering water bill assistance to residents with low incomes and who are delinquent with their water bill payments. Qualifying applicants can receive up to $400 toward their bill by demonstrating an ability to make four consecutive, timely payments on their account — prior to CEDA’s one-time payment. Fundraiser to feature chili cook-off and silent auction

In partnership with the Hoffman Estates Fire Department, the Hoffman Estates Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association will host its first Chili Cook-Off and Silent Auction Fundraiser from 4-8 p.m. Feb. 6 at Village Hall, 1900 Hassell Road. Attendees will choose the winning firehouse chili recipe — made by each station and shift at the fire department — and the silent auction will include Chicago Blackhawks and Cubs memorabilia, and local dining and entertainment options. The cost is $12 for adults and free for children ages 12 and under. All proceeds will go toward purchasing equipment for the Hoffman Estates Citizen’s Fire Academy. Friends of Library announces used book sale

The Friends of the Arlington Heights Memorial Library will host its Fab Feb Used Book Sale from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 6 in the Hendrickson Room and Cardinal Room at the library, 500 N. Dunton Ave.; and from noon to 3 p.m. (Cardinal Room) and noon to 4:30 p.m. (Hendrickson Room) Feb. 7. The sale will include a selection of used books — including a wide variety of cookbooks, and materials on history and British Royalty — as well as movies, magazines, music, puzzles and games. Police Department taking applications for Citizen’s Police Academy

The Glenview Police Department is accepting applications (until Feb. 15) for the 2016 Citizen’s Police Academy. Those selected will participate in 10 information sessions touching on patrol functions, crime lab operations, community relations and police training. The program will consist of three-hour sessions, to be held at 6:30 p.m. weekly (beginning March 3 and running through May 5) at the police department, 2500 E. Melrose Park

Village receives grant to boost safe biking and walking

The village announced that it has been chosen as one of three suburban Cook County communities to receive a Healthy HotSpot Technical Assistance Grant from Active Transportation Alliance. The grant will provide the village with free planning services to develop a village-wide active transportation plan, intended to provide residents with on-street bicycle lanes, sidewalk and intersection improvements, and policies and programs that will make biking and walking safer and more convenient throughout the village. In addition, community members will have opportunities to share their ideas both online and at community events. The Healthy HotSpot Program is an initiative led by the Cook County Department of Public Health, and the program is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Park District to host Zumba Glow Party

The Hickory Hills Park District will host Zumba Glow Party from 6:30-7:45 p.m. Feb. 5 in Activity Room A & B at Krueger Park, 9100 S. 88th Ave. Participants are encouraged to dress in white, neon/fluorescent colors for a Zumba fitness program, led by instructor Anabel Volsansky. Glow sticks and necklaces will be provided to the first 20 registrants, and each participant will receive a bottle of water. Library invites residents to Black History fest

The Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., will host its 11th annual Black History Family Festival from 1-5 p.m. Feb. 6. This year’s theme is “Hallowed Grounds: Sites of African American Memories,” and the event will feature award-winning author and lecturer Glennette Tilly Turner, who will present her nationally recognized Underground Railroad research program. The festival also includes the Second Baptist Church’s Sankofa Wax Museum Exhibit (honoring local African-American historians), children’s crafts and stories, and entertainment and refreshments.
