Las Vegas Night Fundraiser to boost BGHS sports

Buffalo Grove High School will host a Las Vegas Night Fundraiser from 7-11 p.m. March 3 at Ditka’s Restaurant, 200 W. Euclid Ave., Arlington Heights. The event includes gaming, appetizers and a cash bar, as well as a silent auction, raffle prizes, door busters and split the pot. Tickets are $50 in advance and $60 at the door. Staff of elected officials to host open meetings

The village announced that staff from the offices of State Senator Julie Morrison (D-29th) and Congressman Brad Schneider (D-10th) will be on hand to meet and discuss issues with community members from 9-11 a.m. Feb. 27 and March 27 at Indian Trails Public Library, 355 Schoenbeck Road. Staff from Morrison’s office will meet privately with attendees to answer questions about senior services, consumer protection and fraud, property taxes, veterans’ services, and other state services and benefits. Staff from Schneider’s office will discuss USCIS, Medicare, Social Security, Veterans Affairs, the IRS and any other federal agency. No appointment is necessary for these open meetings. Catlow Theater to host ‘Oscar Shorts’ film fest

The Catlow Theater, 116 W. Main St., and the Barrington Cultural Commission will present, “Oscar Shorts,” a film festival featuring the 2018 Academy Award-nominated short films and live action films, from noon to 4 p.m. March 3 and 4 (Feb. 24 is sold out). This year’s nominated short films are “Garden Party,” “Lou,” “Negative Space” and “Revolting Rhymes.” The nominated live action films are “DeKalb Elementary,” “My Nephew Emmett,” “The Eleven O’Clock,” “The Silent Wind” and “Watu Wote (All of Us).” Trailers for each of the films can be viewed at www.oscars.org. Some of the films are not officially rated and may contain content not appropriate for young children. Tickets for the film fest are $15 each, and are limited. Commission for Disabled Citizens seeks award nominees

The village announced that the Commission for Disabled Citizens is seeking nominations for the Champion of Community Award. The award will recognize an outstanding resident, employee or student in Hoffman Estates. Nominees must demonstrate that they have worked to overcome the challenges associated with their physical, mental and/or cognitive disability, thereby achieving excellence through academic work, community involvement or extracurricular activities. A letter of support that highlights the aforementioned qualities of the nominee, as well as his/her contact information, must be included with all entries. Triton announces 2018 Wall of Fame inductees

The Triton College Alumni Council has selected 10 individuals to be inducted into its Distinguished Alumni Wall of Fame for 2018. The Alumni Wall of Fame was established to honor and recognize the academic, personal and professional accomplishments of Triton’s distinguished alumni. Police Dept. tabs Rzyski as new Deputy Chief

The village announced that Brian Rzyski has officially assumed the role of Deputy Chief of the Park Forest Police Department. Rzyski replaces former Deputy Chief Christopher Mannino, who was promoted to Police Chief in October 2017. Twelve of Rzyski’s 18 years with the Park Forest Police Department have been in the investigations division, where he has held the positions of Detective, Detective Corporal and Detective Commander. Rzyski has also served as a homicide investigator with the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force, and is a certified fire investigator as well. In addition, he was a member of the Park Forest Special Operation Group and also served as the department’s field training coordinator. Throughout his career, Rzyski has received 26 outstanding service awards, six meritorious awards and two term awards, and was voted by his peers as the 2008 Officer of the Year.
