Village approves TIF funds to upgrade senior services

The village reported that the Wheeling Board of Trustees and the Wheeling Park District Board of Commissioners recently reached an agreement to apply $1.8 million in Tax Increment Funding (TIF) funds toward the renovation and expansion of the Community Recreation Center (CRC) at Heritage Park, 100 Community Blvd. This contribution to the $18.8 million project serves to secure a state-of-the-art facility for senior recreation services in Wheeling. Under the agreement, the Wheeling Park District will provide a permanent home for senior recreation programming, and for the village’s popular congregate dining program upon completion of the renovation project. The CRC is located in the Town Center-II TIF District, established in 2014 to spur growth along the Dundee Road corridor. Apart from the congregate dining program, all of the village’s senior programming has been hosted at the CRC since the start of 2018, when the village closed the Wheeling Pavilion Senior Center after the facility became inadequate to serve the needs of its members. Village launches new textile recycling program

In an effort to help dramatically reduce the harmful impact of textile waste, the village announced the launch of a new textile recycling program, starting June 28. The program, offered in partnership with Simple Recycling, provides free, year-round textile collection on the same day as the regularly scheduled recycling pick-up (Thursday or Friday). Additional bags are also available at the Public Services Department, 6849 W. Touhy Ave., from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and online at www.simplerecycling.com/bag-request/.
