Dist. 113 board names trio of new administrators

The Township High School District 113 Board of Education recently approved the contracts of two interim superintendents, Dr. Benjamin Martindale and Dr. Linda Yonke, and the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment, Dr. Elizabeth Perez Robertson. Martindale brings nearly five decades of experience in the field of education. He retired in 2017 from North Chicago Community Unit School District (CUSD) 187 in 2017 after spending five years as Chief Education Officer. Martindale’s superintendent career includes tenures at Gurnee School District 56, Round Lake Area Schools CUSD 116 and Lake Bluff Elementary School District 65. He also served as an assistant superintendent and Regional Supervisor of Instructional Services for the Special Education District of Lake County. Yonke worked for 41 years in public education, retiring in 2017 from New Trier Township School District 203 after spending 11 years as Superintendent and two years as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. She also has 12 years of experience as a high school principal. In addition to serving as principal at Highland Park High School in 2017-18, Robertson has served as an assistant principal at Highland Park and as World Languages Department Chair at Deerfield High School. Prior to joining District 113, in 2008, Robertson taught Spanish for more than a decade and took on administrative roles at Niles Township High School District 219, serving as a director of curriculum development for the Foreign Language, English, Reading and English as a Second Language departments. She was later promoted to District Director for Foreign Language and English as a Second Language, and also served at Stevenson High School as an assistant principal and also as Division Director of World Languages and English Language Learners. LCDOT road patching projects to disrupt traffic flow

The Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) announced that Brandywyn Lane at Deerfield Parkway will be closed to through-traffic until the afternoon of Aug. 3. The closure is necessary to safely patch concrete lanes on Deerfield Parkway through the Brandywyn Lane intersection. Local traffic will have access from Thompson Boulevard south to Brandywyn Court. The detour route is Deerfield Parkway to Green Knolls Drive to Thompson Boulevard. In addition, Deerfield Parkway between Route 83 and Buffalo Grove Road will concrete patching work performed to repair and smooth out severely cracked pavement. One lane will be used for moving traffic in each direction while the other lane is patched, and the operation will then switch to the remaining lane. Annual Best of the Burbs Wingfest to aid WACO

The village announced that the Woodfield Area Children’s Organization (WACO) will host the 18th Annual Best of the Burbs Wingfest from 12:30-5:30 p.m. July 29 at Drink Nightclub, 871 E. Algonquin Road. The adults-only (ages 21 and up) event is a fundraiser for WACO, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing basic needs, educational support and more for children living at or near the poverty level in the Northwest and Western suburbs. More than a dozen area restaurants will serve all-you-can-eat chicken wings as they compete for the title of Best in the Burbs and the Thighsman Trophy. Village nets lofty IDOT grant for major road project

The village announced that it has received an Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) grant of nearly $23 million to support the Franklin Park Improvement Project, which includes the design and reconstruction of Franklin Avenue from Mannheim Road to Runge Road. The project is a cooperative effort with the Cook County Highway Department, Cook County Economic Development Department, Canadian Pacific Railway and the West Central Municipal Conference, and was the highest-scoring project in the Illinois Competitive Freight Grant Program. The reconstruction project includes road widening, modern traffic signals, improved lighting, bike/pedestrian paths, new storm sewers and more. Phase 1 preliminary engineering is scheduled to be completed this year. Design work would then begin in 2019, and construction would be completed in 2023. Police Dept. offers 24/7 drug collection box

The village announced that a collection box has been placed in the lobby of the Hillside Police Department, 425 Hillside Ave., to offer residents a safe and secure method to dispose of unused or unwanted prescription and non-prescription medications. The collection box is available to Hillside residents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Bio-hazardous waste materials and sharp objects should not be placed in the collection box. Evanston

Free screening of film on ex-mayor Morton offered

The city announced that non-profit historical organization Shorefront will host a screening of the documentary film, “Lorraine H. Morton: A Life Worthwhile,” at 11:30 a.m. and again at 12:30 p.m. July 30 in the Parasol Room (4th floor) at the Lorraine H. Morton Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave. The film examines the life of Morton, who served the Evanston community for more than 50 years as an educator, alderman and the city’s first African-American mayor (1993-2009).
