School District 214
Reallocated funds provide iPads for every student
According to a report, High School District 214 has reallocated funds in order to provide each of its 12,000 students with an iPad for the 2015-16 school year, which began Aug. 26. The report also stated that parents of students in the district (consisting of Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove, Hersey, Prospect, Rolling Meadows and Wheeling high schools) will have opportunities to attend introductory training sessions (free of charge) at the Apple Store, located at Woodfield Mall, in Schaumburg. The $5.2 million program reportedly was paid for with a combination of grants and taxpayer money from the district’s budget. Baby Expo offers young families array of goods and services
Baby Expo, presented by Family Time Magazine and advertised as the biggest baby expo in the Chicago area for new and expectant families, will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 12 at Morraine Valley Community College, 9000 W. College Parkway, Building M, Palos Hills. The event promises one-stop shopping for the newest and most unique merchandise and services available for the care of all babies. Dozens of industry-related exhibitors will be on hand, and the Fun Activities list includes Diaper Derby,” pony rides and a small petting zoo, singing and dancing, face painting, a balloon artist, door prizes and more. Demonstrations by experts include car seat safety, strollers and high chairs. Baby Expo also features family entertainment, and giveaways (including an overnight resort stay and a specialized baby bookcase). Children’s choir to perform at St. John Lutheran Church
The St. John Choristers, a children’s choir (consisting of students in grades 3-12) conducted by director Paul Lindblad, will present their fall concert, “Hooray for Hollywood Plus,” at 4 p.m. Sept. 13 in the St. John Lutheran Church, 305 Circle Ave. The show will feature performances of Baroque composer Antonio Lotti’s “Mass in C,” followed by “Hooray for Hollywood,” a medley of popular movie music. City to host day of paper shredding
Residents Shred Day, hosted by Mayor James Ford, the Economic Development Commission and the City Council of Country Club Hills, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 5 in the parking lot of the Country Club Hills Amphitheater, located at 4150 183rd Street. Those participating are allowed to bring up to three boxes of paper, and are asked to not include binder clips, paper clips, spiral notebooks, rubber bands, pens, coins and any other non-paper materials. Library to feature appearance by best-selling children’s author
The Evanston Public Library, 1703 Orrington Ave., continues its Children’s Events and Activities series with a visit from best-selling children’s author Jon Scieszka at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 3 in the main library’s Community Meeting Room. Scieszka will introduce his latest book, “Fran Einstein and the Brainturbo!” — and give a brief talk, answer questions, pose for photos and sign books. In addition, children can enter the Mad Scientist costume contest and win prizes. Northlake to host citywide garage sale
The city will host Northlake Citywide Garage Sale 2015 on Sept. 11, 12 and 13. More than 100 Northlake households are scheduled to take part, and a complete list of garage sales will be available at participating locations, as well as online at www.northlakecity.com. Park district sets date for Fishing Derby
The Mount Prospect Park District will host its 2015 Fishing Derby from 9-11 a.m. Sept. 12 at Robert T. Jackson Clearwater Park, located at the southwest corner of Busse Road and Lonnquist Blvd. The event is open to boys and girls (ages 4-14), accompanied by an adult. Bait will be furnished by the park district, at the check-in tent. Participants must bring their own rod, reel and tackle. The fee is $7 (residents); $12 (non-residents); and free for adults. Berkeley
Parking lot reconstruction project to begin soon
The Village of Berkeley reported that the Park District Joint Parking Lot Reconstruction Project is scheduled to soon break ground. The project will update the existing parking lot — located directly across the street from Village Hall, 5819 Electric Ave. — with a
user-friendly layout and increased accessibility to the Prairie Path for park visitors. During construction, the parking lot will be unavailable. In addition, Electric Avenue will be temporarily turned into a one-way, westbound roadway, and eastbound traffic will be diverted to Prospect Ave. (at Coolidge Ave.) as a detour to Taft Ave. Diagonal parking will be made available along the north side of Electric Avenue (including parking for anyone conducting business at Village Hall). Berkeley Park visitors are encouraged to use the park district parking lot, located off of Maple Avenue near the water tower. The project is slated to be completed in four weeks, depending on weather conditions.

Elmwood Park
Fire Dept. to host Safety Fair open house
The Village of Elmwood Park and the Elmwood Park Fire Department will host Safety Fair, an open-house event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 5 at the firehouse located at 7 Conti Parkway.
