Evanston
Library presents program with noted author, professor
The Evanston Public Library, in partnership with the Evanston Community Foundation’s Communityworks Initiative and Rotary International, will present an evening with Dr. Dana Suskind, author of “Thirty Million Words: Building a Child’s Brain, from 5:30-7:30
p.m. Sept. 24 at the Rotary Building Auditorium, 1560 Sherman Ave. Suskind serves as Professor of Surgery at the University of Chicago, Director of the Pediatric Cochlear Implant Program, and Founder/Director of the Thirty Million Words Initiative, which uses scientific research to show the critical importance of early language exposure on the developing child. The initiative is supported by a broad coalition of public and private partnerships, and is an extension of Suskind’s Project ASPIRE, which assures that patients from disadvantaged backgrounds reach their full listening and spoken language potential. Metropolis to host ladies-only fundraising event
The Metropolis Performing Arts Centre, 111 W. Campbell Street, will present “Sunday Soiree,” a ladies-only fundraising event, from 4:30-9 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Metropolis Ballroom. The event includes shopping (for jewelry, clothing, holiday gifts and more), hors d’oeuvres, wine and a concert (in the theater) by the Student Body Band. The first 100 ladies to register will be entered into a special drawing; tickets for the drawing are available in advance (25 tickets for $20) and on the day of the event (20 tickets for $20). Rec center offers No Limit Boot Camp fitness class
The Crestwood Recreation and Wellness Center, 5331 W. 135th Street, is offering No Limit Boot Camp, a class (for ages 18 and up) featuring exercises that can be modified to any individual’s fitness level in order to increase endurance, energy and athletic performance. Instructed by Mike Brady, a certified personal trainer, classes are being held from 7-8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. The cost is $60 (residents) for 10 classes and $70 (non-residents). Ira Gershwin subject of library program
As part of its Afternoon Encore Series, the Mount Prospect Public Library, 10 S. Emerson Street, will present Ira Gershwin: Master Wordsmith at 1 p.m. Sept. 24. The program will provide examples of some of Gershwin’s most memorable songs, and stories about what inspired him to write — including collaborations with his brother, George, as well as lyrics he wrote for several other composers. Franklin Park
Village warns residents about electricity solicitors
The village announced that it has issued a warning to residents to be on the alert for representatives of Green Energy, who have been soliciting door-to-door in Franklin Park. Solicitors have been asking residents to sign a petition requesting that ComEd be required to use clean energy. By signing the document, residents unknowingly agree to switch their electricity provider, and the village does not endorse companies who market door-to-door. The village is asking residents not to share electric bill and personal information with Green Energy reps or any such solicitors.

Hillside
Annual cemetery tour on tap at area sites
The village will host its 13th Annual Cemetery Tour on Oct. 3. The event begins at 9 a.m. with a continental breakfast at Village Hall, 425 Hillside Ave. It continues at 9:45 a.m. with a trolley tour of Mount Carmel and Queen of Peace cemeteries to view military tribute monuments, and historical gravesites of entertainers, sports figures and legends in the history of Chicago, as well as other sites. The tour concludes with a deli lunch, beginning at 11:30 a.m., at Village Hall. The cost is $40 per person (payable to the Village of Hillside); reservations are necessary. Evergreen Park
Village to host annual classic car show
The village will host its annual Hot Rod Classic Car Show from 3-10 p.m. Sept. 25 at Yukich Field, located at 9100 S. Kedzie Ave., near 91st Street. The event will benefit “My Mary Cate” (visit www.mymarycate.org). Entry fee is $20 per car (to be judged) and $10

Glenview
Village to install automated water meters
The village reported it will be replacing the 16,000 residential and commercial water meters within Glenview with new automated meters. The new meters — which will automatically transmit readings wirelessly — will allow the village to implement an automated reading process intended to provide better customer service, greater accuracy and reduced operational costs. Siemens Industries was awarded the contract to perform the update, and residents will be contacted in order to set up an appointment to receive a new meter. Rolling Meadows
Police department to accept unwanted prescription drugs
The Rolling Meadows Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will provide the public with its 10th opportunity in five years to help prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. Pills can be brought to the Old Public Works Building, 3200 Central Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 26. The service is free, and anonymous (no questions asked). Tree trimming in village set to begin in October
The village reported that ComEd intends to perform vegetation management activities (focused on tree trimming) in Niles, beginning in October and continuing through December. These activities represent a key component of ComEd’s maintenance program to ensure system electrical reliability, as vegetation contact with ComEd’s equipment is a leading cause of outages.
