Oak Park

Village seeks artists for Green Line mural project

The village is seeking a total of six artists to create murals that will continue the transformation of the railroad retaining walls along the CTA Green Line corridor in Oak Park from blank concrete into colorful canvases. Each artist selected will receive $500 for materials prior to the beginning of the project, and another $500 upon completion. The murals range in size from 6-by-8-feet to 6-by-11. Artists from Oak Park and the greater Chicago area are invited to participate. The concepts of the selected artists will be chosen by a panel of judges from the village’s Public Arts Advisory Committee, the Oak Park Area Arts Council and the local arts community. Concepts will be judged on artistic merit, appropriateness for a public way and originality. Paint is the only medium that may be used, and should consist of a quality that can withstand weather conditions for a reasonable amount of time. All murals must be protected with a sealant as well. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. May 27. Interested artists (ages 18 and up only) must submit an application and a vertical rendering of the design. Applications are available online at www.oakparkareaartscouncil.org or at the Arts Council’s office, located in Room 212 at Village Hall, 123 Madison St. For more information, contact the Arts Council at (708) 358-5692 or via email at info@oakparkareaartscouncil.org.

ComEd begins project to repair utility poles

The village reported that ComEd has begun a project to inspect and potentially repair 3,500 of its utility poles in Hinsdale throughout 2016. To access the poles, often located in backyard easements, contractors may be required to cross over private property. Once within ComEd’s easement, workers may move from pole to pole without returning to ground level. Work may include drilling core samples of the poles, excavation work in the immediate vicinity of a pole location, or occasional injections of a rot- and insect-resistant compound within the pole. Osmose Utilities Services, Inc., ComEd’s authorized contractor, has been instructed to alert residents whenever possible before accessing private property. Osmose and ComEd employees may knock on doors or leave hangers as notification, and all employees should be carrying Com Ed-generated identification.
