Buffalo Grove

 Police Dept. to take part in Cop on a Rooftop fundraiser

The Buffalo Grove Police Department will participate in the annual Cop on a Rooftop event — intended to heighten awareness and raise funds for the upcoming Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics Illinois — from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 20 at three Dunkin’ Donuts locations in the village: 245 McHenry Road, 1169 N. Old McHenry Road, and 1697 Weiland Road. Anyone making a donation during the event will receive a free donut coupon, and those who donate at least $10 will receive an Enforcement Torch Run travel mug (while supplies last) and a coupon for a medium-size coffee. Other items, including Torch Run T-shirts and hats, will be available for various donation amounts, and raffle tickets will be available for a chance to win a 2015 Harley Davidson Street Glide motorcycle. Community Band to perform at Patty Turner Center

The Deerfield Community Band will present, “Music From Around the World” — a showcase performance featuring musical scores, including “The Russian Sailor’s Dance,” Gustav’s “2nd Suite,” selections from “Les Miserables,” and more — from 2-3 p.m. May 22 at the Patty Turner Center, 375 Elm St. In addition, Gene Pokorny, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Chair Tubist, will give a special brass performance. Trio of area Girls Scouts earn Gold Award

The Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois announced that Lake Zurich resident Megan Kalafut, 18, and Kildeer residents Lindsay Schwartz, 19, and Erin McDermott, 17, have earned the Girl Scouts’ highest award: The Girl Scout Gold Award. Kalafut and McDermott received their awards during a ceremony held on April 11 at Quentin Road Bible Baptist Church, in Hawthorn Woods. Schwartz will receive her award during a private ceremony on May 20. Kalafut was cited for her Take Action community project, focused on bringing STEM  (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) enrichment activities to low-income youth. McDermott, a budding naturalist concerned about diminishing populations of the monarch butterfly, worked to create a butterfly garden and enhance an existing prairie area located at a local nature center. Schwartz’s Gold Award project, “Out of Site, Still in Mind,” focused on educating middle school students about the dangers and consequences of viewing pornography.  SWALCO to host chemical waste collection event

SWALCO (The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County) will host a household chemical waste collection event from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 21 at the Vernon Hills Metra Station, located at Route 45 and Ranney Road. Accepted materials include aerosol products, antifreeze and motor oil, fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides, fluorescent light bulbs/CFLs, furniture stripper and varnishes, gasoline and kerosene, household batteries (lithium and rechargeable only), household cleaners, oil-based paints and paint removers, and prescription and over-the-counter medicines and supplements (people and pets). Latex paint, propane tanks, lead-acid and alkaline batteries, DEA controlled substances, business and medical waste, farm chemicals, explosives, asbestos-laden construction debris, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and household electronics will not be accepted. High school newspaper staff earns first-place award in competition

The village reported that Mundelein High School’s student newspaper staff earned a First Place with Special Merit Award in the 2015-16 Most Outstanding High School Newspapers (Senior High Schools’ Enrollment 1,701-2,500 category) competition, conducted by the American Scholastic Press Association. The high school’s publication, The Mustang, earned a total of 950 points out of a possible 1,000 from the judges of the competition. Student staff members and editors of The Mustang include Delaney Appelhans, Adriana Feijoo, Melissa Burgett, Sefani Zeiger, Michael del Rosario, Trevor Fox, Alexander Loding, Ashley Wolfe, Katelyn Stiltman and Natalie Fiocchi.

Village to host annual art and music festival

The village announced that it will host the Fourth Annual Art In The Park Fine Art and Music Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 4 at Lehmann Park, 148 Cedar Ave. The event will include an exhibition of watercolors, acrylics, oils, wood-worked art, handcrafted jewelry, painted furniture, hand-painted designer pillows and more — as well as live music and food options.  Elm Place teacher Hull makes national ‘20 to Watch’ list

The city reported that Elm Place Middle School teacher Christopher Hull has been named one of “20 to Watch” by the National School Board Association’s Technology Leadership Network. Hull is being recognized as an education technology leader for creating an innovative solution that connects data to instruction in the classroom. Hull spearheaded an initiative at Elm Place to co-found Otus, a student performance platform that combines a data warehouse and a collection of classroom management tools in a single platform. Otus is used to provide a simpler method for educators to make data-based instructional decisions, intended to maximize student learning on a daily basis. Elm Place Principal Heather Schumacher nominated Hull, a social studies instructor.

Wauconda

Historical Society to host program on Les Paul

The Wauconda Township Historical Society will present, “Remembering Les Paul with Steve & Johnnie” from 2-4 p.m. June 5 at Wauconda Township Hall, 505 W. Bonner Road. The event will feature Chicago radio legends Steve King and Johnnie Putman, a husband-and-wife duo heard overnight on WGN-AM radio, in a program to discuss the couple’s new book, “A Little More Les.” The book shares memories of the authors’ friendship with the late Paul, a Grammy Award-winning musician who invented the iconic Gibson electric guitar named in his honor. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing. Reservations are required.
