Egyptian Theatre’s Mel Brooks Film Series features “The Twelve Chairs,” a movie set in 1920s Soviet Russia, at 7 p.m Jan. 17.

Jan. 13 

Sycamore Winter Luminary Hike 

7 p.m. 

Russell Forest Preserve, 25179 Shannon Lane, Sycamore  

$5 Sycamore residents; $7 non-resident 

Hike by the light of the moon with ice luminaries while discovering the beauty and stillness of a winter wonderland at night. Then, warm up and enjoy s’mores by the fire. Each family will go home with instructions to make ice luminaries. Children ages 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Dress for the weather. Bring snowshoes or a sled to pull if you have them.

 

 

Jan. 14 

Sycamore Canvas and Cocktails 

6-9 p.m. 

Sycamore Golf Course Clubhouse, 940 E. State St., Sycamore 

$40 for residents; $50, non-residents 

Come for a night of painting fun. Students will follow along with the instructor as they create their own painting of Tommy Hawk of the Chicago Blackhawks. Little to no painting experience is required. Bring a smock to wear, or clothes that can get messy. Bring a hair dryer if possible to help dry paint quicker. Participants receive a ticket for one complimentary drink. The event is open to people 21 and older.

DeKalb 2017 Wedding Expo

Northern Illinois’ largest wedding expo will feature more than 40 vendors. Participants can sample cake and appetizers and have the chance to win prizes and valuable wedding discounts. Advanced Vertical Adventure Terrarium Workshop 

1-3 p.m. 

Blumen Gardens, 403 Edward St., Sycamore 

TBD (based on supplies used) 

Participants will use vertical glass containers to construct a landscape suitable for the adventuresome Terra Folk figurines. Blumen’s designers will guide participants in designing an original terrarium. Call to register at (815) 895-3737. A deposit of $20 will be taken at registration. Class size will be limited.

DeKalb MLK Day Celebration for Peace

Martin Luther King Jr. spoke out for peace and unity. In this program designed for teenagers, join teens and members of the Northern Illinois University family in celebrating our similarities and differences. Learn and gain understanding about cultural diversity. Come share thoughts and opinions in a safe, judgement-free place. No registration is necessary and snacks will be provided. Egyptian Theatre’s Mel Brooks Film Series features “The Twelve Chairs,” a movie set in 1920s Soviet Russia. A fallen aristocrat, a priest and a con artist search for a treasure of jewels hidden inside one of 12 dining chairs, lost during the Russian Revolution.

Getting Dirty: How Bacteria Impact and Improve Human Health
