First written and performed in 1953, the play tells the story of a drifter named Hal making his way through Kansas. He stops in a small town to work for Helen Potts, an older woman in town. He becomes reacquainted with his old college friend, Alan Seymour, and winds up falling in love with Alan’s girlfriend, Madge Owens. The first lecture of the Local Lore series is titled “The Women behind the Big Three: Harriet Ellwood, Lucinda Glidden and Sophia Haish.” In honor of Women’s History Month, three speakers will explore the lives of the women who were married to DeKalb’s barbed wire barons. This program will be presented by Ellwood House Curator Tricia Runzel, Glidden Homestead Executive Director Rob Glover, and Haish descendant Jessi Haish LaRue. Gaelic Storm, the chart-topping, multi-national Celtic band, mixes traditional Irish music with modern influences. The group performs drinking songs, sea shanties, furiously-strummed instrumentals and sing-along melodies. It performed “Irish Party in Third Class” in the movie, “Titanic.”

Songwriting by Design

Dan the Bard Dan is an accomplished songwriter with 10 published CDs of original music. In this program, Dan will lead the audience in writing a song, including lyrics, general melody and chords. Dan will also perform some of his most popular songs including “Pete the Polymorpher,” “The Owlbear Song,” and “Zombie Apocalypse Love Story.” His music is appropriate for all ages, and enjoyable for fans of folk and Renaissance music, Dungeons and Dragons, Doctor Who, Star Wars, Star Trek, anime and steampunk.
