“Sing” is about a koala impresario who stages a grand singing competition for the world’s animals in order to save his elegant theater. The movie will be shown to entertain students on spring break and to raise money for the Barn on Baseline Animal Shelter.

Each day offers a different hands-on craft to make including caterpillars, bunnies, daffodils, pinwheels and more! Craft is included in admission prices.

Checkers Tournament
3-4 p.m.
DeKalb Public Library, 309 Oak St., DeKalb

Teens can test their skill at checkers when they compete against each other one-on-one. Losers are eliminated each round until there is only one left standing. The winner will receive a gift card to Starbucks. Arrive by 3 p.m. to sign up for a spot to play. Games start at 3:15 p.m. The tournament is intended for teens only. The expo will include food samples from a variety of local restaurants, crafts and games for children, live demonstrations, 2017 car models, inflatable bounce houses and a DJ. Parking is free.

Chemo Wars: Chemistry Demo Night

This year’s NIU Chemistry Club event, Chem Wars, will feature experiments used by big film studios. Crowd favorites like the liquid nitrogen bomb and ping pong madness will return, and freshly prepared ice cream will be served at the end of the performance. Expect bright flashes of light and intermittent periods of low light and/or darkness during the event. Free parking will be available. STEM Divas: Wearable Tech

For children 7 and older, this class will show youngsters how to create their own small electric circuits that can be used to add lights and other tech to their fashions. Students will learn about electricity and LEDs, as well as soldering and basic circuitry. Register at registeruo.niu.edu.

I Survived

From natural disasters such as volcanoes, earthquakes and shark attacks to human-made events such as the sinking of the Titanic or the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the I Survived series puts the reader at the center of the action. Join STEM Read, author Lauren Tarshis and university experts for an immersive, hands-on survival game. Students in grades 4 to 8 will use their quick thinking and creative problem-solving skills to complete a variety of challenges and get their teams out alive.
