Auto care centers aid domestic violence shelter

Members of the NAPA AutoCare Centers of DeKalb County recently donated a check for $427 to Safe Passage, a domestic violence service providing help for people dealing with domestic abuse. The donation was generated through a portion of oil change sales at 3-D Auto Repair, Archer Alignment, Bockman’s, Mike’s Auto & Truck Repair, Barb City Automotive, University Shell, Napa Auto Parts, Illini Tire of DeKalb, Ritz’s Southtown Auto and The Motor Works of DeKalb.

 

Area artists to display at regional art show

The Kiswaukee Valley Art League will hold its 46th annual Northern Illinois Art Show June 3-June 4, on the lawn of the DeKalb County Courthouse.

Held each spring at the courthouse, 133 W. State St., Sycamore, the art show features the work of artists in fine arts and crafts in various media from across the Midwest. This show is an opportunity for artists to reach a wide audience and a place for shoppers to find unique gifts. The art show attracts artists, residents, and tourists from across Northern Illinois and beyond. The show will be open from 10 am.-5 p.m. June 3, and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. June 4.

High school grads talk about travel adventures

Two recent Sycamore High School graduates will share their exchange student stories at the next Sycamore History Museum Brown Bag lunch June 1. Brianna Jacobson traveled to Argentina for six weeks last summer and Marcela Silva, a student from Brazil, has spent the past year at Sycamore High School. They were able to participate in these opportunities through the Sycamore Rotary Club’s student exchange program.

This program will be held at the Sycamore History Museum, 1730 N. Main St. The talk is free, but donations are appreciated. Coffee and cookies are provided. Garage sale signup ends June 2

Residents still have time to participate in Sycamore’s citywide garage sale, which will take place June 8-June 10. It is estimated there will be as many as 100 sales across town, many of which will be multi-house sales. Anyone who wants the address of their sale listed in the program should visit discoversycamore.com to receive a registration form or call (815) 895-3456. Registration deadline is June 2 and the listings will be posted on discoversycamore.com June 5.

Exercise classes are designed for senior citizens

Two sessions of classes to help senior citizens build up body strength will be offered by the Kishwaukee College Continuing Education department. Bodies in Motion classes beginning in June at the Sycamore Public Library and Barb City Manor.

The class at the library, 103 E. State St., Sycamore, fwill hbeheld 11-11:40 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 1 through July 18. The class also will be offered at Barb City Manor, 680 Haish Blvd., DeKalb, from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 1 through July 18. Both sessions will not meet on June 6 and July 4. The cost is $25 for senior citizens and $75 for non-seniors.

Bodies in Motion is a fitness class that includes chair exercises and activities that may improve eye, hand and foot coordination as well as balance, flexibility range of motion and energy. The class is conducted in a fun atmosphere while listening to music from the 1930s, 1940s and

Lions Club spruces up park

Answering the call of Paul Bafia, executive director of the Genoa Park District, members of the Genoa Lions Club cleaned a playground in Genoa during Park Volunteer Day. The Lions worked on Lions Corner Park at Madison and Walnut streets, spreading new wood chips under all playground equipment.

Lions participating in the event included René VanDerHeyden and his daughter, Annie VanDerHeyden; Paul Bafia; Jerry Helland; Jim Sanford; Mike Dreska and his son, James; Mike Ross and Bob Becker.
