DeKalb County Calendar of Events Feb. 28 – March 6

Fourteen participating businesses and restaurants in Downtown DeKalb and five in Sycamore will be among the more than 400 shops in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin that will be open with special events for the annual Vintage Shop Hop weekend March 2 and 3.

Duffy Hudson will give three performances of his one-man show about Dr. Seuss in time for Read Across America, a national annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss.

Ellwood House Opening Day Lecture Series Event

To kick off the museum’s new tour season, Kay Shelton, president of the Lincoln Highway Association, will present a one-hour lecture titled “Women and the Early Days of the Automobile on the Lincoln Highway,” will include stories about Samuel E. Green Lens Film Series

The Green Lens Film Series, a four-part film series, ends with a showing of “The 13th,” the amendment to the U. S. Constitution that abolished slavery. But the amendment also included a provision many people don’t know about and that is what this documentary brings to view. That provision justifies the use of forced labor as long as the laborer is a convict.

Cantankerous retiree Norman Thayer and his conciliatory wife, Ethel, spend summers at their New England vacation home on the shores of idyllic Golden Pond. This year, their adult daughter, Chelsea, visits with her new fiancée and his teenage son Billy, on their way to Europe. After leaving Billy behind to bond with Norman, Chelsea returns, attempting to repair the long-strained relationship with her aging father before it’s too late. The Egyptian Theatre’s 2018 Best Picture Film Series ends with the showing of “Moonlight,” which was named Best Picture in 2017. The movie takes a look at three defining chapters in the life of Chiron, a young black man growing up in Miami. His epic journey to manhood is guided by the kindness, support and love of the community that helps raise him.
