Great Souls Film Series: “Selma”

The film series will wrap up with a showing of the 2014 film, “Selma.” Although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 legally desegregated the South, discrimination was still rampant in certain areas, making it very difficult for blacks to register to vote. In 1965, Selma, Alabama became the battleground in the fight for suffrage. The movie tells the story about how, despite violent opposition, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (played by David Oyelowo) and his followers pressed forward on an epic march from Selma to Montgomery.

Crew will meet at Disc Golf Course. Volunteers should wear gloves and sturdy shoes or boots. There will be a walk after the pull to look for native woodland plants and critters. Cinco de Mayo will feature entertainment for the whole family. The party gets going with live bands, dancing, a margarita bar, a beer garden and authentic Mexican food. Opening Day will feature tours of Joseph Glidden’s home, the 1870s brick barn where he invented barbed wire and a working blacksmith shop. The 2018 theme is Time Machine. Programs will examine key aspects of history from the Ice Age to the 21st Century, innovation in machines of agriculture and industry and local history.
