The Prairie Park: Garlic Mustard Pull will be held from 9-11 a.m. May 5. Volunteers should meet at the Disc Golf Course, corner of Glidden and Clifford, DeKalb. Garlic mustard is an invasive species within are woodlands, and needs to be removed.

Club 55 Sycamore Open House

Great Souls Film Series: “Selma”

The film series will wrap up with a showing of the 2014 film, “Selma.” Although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 legally desegregated the South, discrimination was still rampant in certain areas, making it very difficult for blacks to register to vote. In 1965, Selma, Alabama became the battleground in the fight for suffrage. The movie tells the story about how, despite violent opposition, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (played by David Oyelowo) and his followers pressed forward on an epic march from Selma to Montgomery.

Cinco de Mayo Zumba Party

Dance your heart out at the Cinco de Mayo Zumba Party. The event will provide high-energy workouts led by the YMCA’s team of Zumba instructors. Free for YMCA members and non-members. Non-members should bring photo IDs and sign in at the front desk.

Prairie Park: Garlic Mustard Pull

Garlic mustard is an invasive species within are woodlands, and needs to be removed. The DeKalb Park District will host a Community Day to clean up Prairie Park. Training and bags will be provided. Crew will meet at Disc Golf Course. Volunteers should wear gloves and sturdy shoes or boots. There will be a walk after the pull to look for native woodland plants and critters. The public is invited to stop by any reference desk and pick out a free comic book in celebration of Comic Book Day.

Steelband and Ukuleles

The Northern Illinois University Community School of the Arts (CSA) and NIU will present a concert. The CSA Steelband is directed by Yuko Asada and the NIUkulele Ensemble is directed by Eric Schroeder.

Some events are free

Cinco de Mayo will feature entertainment for the whole family. The party gets going with live bands, dancing, a margarita bar, a beer garden and authentic Mexican food. Featured in the Kid’s Corner is a petting zoo, pony rides, games, face painting, a magic balloon man and piñatas. All proceeds will be given to local non-for-profit organizations. Glidden Homestead Opening Day 2018

Glidden Homestead, 921 W. Lincoln Hwy., DeKalb
$4, free for children younger than 14

Opening Day will feature tours of Joseph Glidden’s home, the 1870s brick barn where he invented barbed wire and a working blacksmith shop. The 2018 theme is Time Machine. Programs will examine key aspects of history from the Ice Age to the 21st Century, innovation in machines of agriculture and industry and local history.
