Established in 1888, the Sandwich Fair is the oldest continuing county fair in Illinois. The Sandwich Fair combines old traditions and new features where friends and family come together to enjoy national entertainment, motor events, food, a carnival midway, exhibits, livestock judging and more. DeKalb Farmers Market

Van Buer Plaza, north Second and Locust streets, DeKalb

The DeKalb Farmers Market features more than 30 vendors who sell locally-grown produce, wine, baked goods, flowers and artisan crafts. Musicians perform from 12-1:30 p.m. Debit, credit and LINK cards are accepted. For more information, call 815-756-6306.

Lecture: Milan Township One-Room Schoolhouse

The September installment of the Brown Bag Lunch/Local Lore lecture series will feature Dr. Patrick Roberts, who will talk about the schoolhouse that served as a center for learning in DeKalb County from the turn of the century until 1942. Please note: The lecture will take place at the One-Room Schoolhouse, not at the series’ usual location, Elwood House Museum.

Mutt Strut 5K Run and Walk-a-Thon

Mutt Strut 5K is a dog-friendly 5K run/walk-a-thon benefiting the more than 2,900 homeless animals cared for each year at Tails Humane Society. The race route follows the DeKalb Nature Trail, beginning and ending at Hopkins Park. Registered doggie participants will get bandannas; humans will get T–shirts. Register at tailshumanesociety.org. Richard Jenkins Film Series

This film series is showing nine of DeKalb native Richard Jenkins’ movies. Jenkins is an Emmy award winner and two-time Academy Award nominee. The Sept. 11 selection is “Eat, Pray, Love.”

This book club meets the second Wednesday of the month. Participants read a variety of genres and enjoy discussing the books. Coffee is provided. Copies of the monthly selection are available at the circulation desk.
