“Love Letters”

Kishwaukee College presents “Love Letters” by A. R. Gurney as its fall play. The play is the story of two young people from similar backgrounds who take very different paths in life. Despite leading lives which should not intersect, they can’t let go of each other throughout their 50-year friendship, and marriages and families with other people. Turkey Trot 5K

9 a.m.-12 p.m.; registration begins at 7 a.m.

Starts and ends on east North Ave., Cortland

$10-$25

This family-orientated 5K run/walk is pet friendly, stroller friendly and attracts people of all ages. This USATF flat course winds through the neighborhoods of Cortland. With no elevation, this is a fast course, perfect to earn a personal record. Medals will be given to all finishers. Trophies and Turkeys will be awarded to the top male and female finisher along with medals to be given to the top three in each age category. A kids’ fun run will start at 8:30 a.m. Proceeds benefit the youth of Cortland through the activities of the Cortland Lions Club. More information, go to cortlandturkeytrot.com.

An event for children 8 months to 8 years old and their caregivers, BLOCK Fest equips families to build a strong foundation in literacy, numeracy and socioemotional learning for their children. This hour-long event takes children through a series of five stations of non-interlocking blocks and engages them in questions that helps them develop their skills through the eight stages of block play. 37th annual Christmas in the Country Arts, Crafts and Bake Sale

Crafts such as needle felting, American Girl clothing, ceramics, spoon jewelry, painted glass, dog treats, holiday decorations and more will be sold by 150 crafters representing 75 Illinois towns and the states of Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin. Admission will benefit the Sandwich School Music Association. No strollers and no smoking will be allowed in any building. Lunch will be available in the high school and middle school and the instant door prize drawing will be in the middle school.

Ellwood House Holiday Tours

Kick off your holiday season with a tour of the elegantly decorated Ellwood House in DeKalb. View the historic home of barbed wire baron Isaac Ellwood in a new light, and enjoy festive decorations on four floors of the 1879 mansion. Special holiday open house events are planned for Dec. 2-Dec. 4.

Volcanoes: Science, Sci-Fi and the Study of Our Explosive Earth

Jim Walker, a volcanologist from Northern Illinois University’s Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences, will share “hot” facts about volcanic eruptions, eruption prediction and the effects of volcanoes on climate and the environment. Special guest Mike Mullin will discuss how he blended science and fiction to create his novel, “Ashfall,” which takes place in the aftermath of the eruption of the super volcano underneath Yellowstone National Park.
