America’s First Sports Hero, Christy Mathewson

Craig Pierce will speak about the triumphs and tragedies of Christy Mathewson’s remarkable and brief life. One hundred years ago, baseball pitcher Mathewson was the most recognized athlete in America, a genuine role model, romanticized sports hero and product spokesman. Ten years later he was dead.

The July 1 film is “Dr. Seuss’ the Lorax.” The imaginative world of Dr. Seuss comes to life in a 3D adventure. Twelve-year-old Ted will do anything to find a real live Truffula Tree in order to impress the girl of his dreams. As he embarks on his journey, Ted discovers the incredible story of the Lorax, a grumpy but charming creature who speaks for the trees.

Guided Walking Tour: Somonauk Street

Elm and Somonauk streets

Join Steven Bigolin as he leads a guided walking tour of Sycamore’s History District. Meet at the Wally Thurow statue at Elm and Somonauk. Bigolin will lead a tour highlighting the architecture and local history connected to the homes along Somonauk Street. The tour will last about an hour and a half. Learn why Somonauk Street was known as Swell Head Row. The tour also will be given Aug. 7 and Sept. 4. For more information, call the Sycamore History Museum, (815) 895-5762.

Independence Day 5K Run/Walk

The DeKalb Park District will host its inaugural Independence Day 5K Run, a USATF-certified course with chip timing. Walkers are welcome. Adult Craft Night

Nature Sleuths – Why do Native Species Matter?

The participants of this after-school nature club will work together to solve mysteries about the natural world through weekly themes and hands-on experiments. Every time a participant joins in on the fun, he or she will get a stamp on a club card and will earn a club badge. For ages 6-10. This program lasts approximately 45-60 minutes.
