Scholarship aids master’s students

The DeKalb County Community Foundation is accepting applications for the Spinoso Masters Scholarship. This scholarship provides up to $10,000 to a student to cover tuition costs of post-undergraduate or master’s studies. Eligible applicants must have graduated from a DeKalb County high school but do not have to currently live in the county. Applications for the Spinoso Masters Scholarship will be accepted until 5 p.m. June 3. For an application, go to http://dekalbccf.org/receive/scholarship-application/.

The scholarship was developed by the Spinoso family of Sycamore when they discovered a lack of scholarship assistance for those beyond the undergraduate years. The family, Sycamore residents for more than 30 years, believes continued education provides a strong foundation for future leaders.

Leave the car home, bike to work

DeKalb Park District officials encourage employers and employees to ditch the car and ride a bicycle to their jobs on May 20, Bike-to-Work Day.

Why? Park officials encourage everyone to celebrate spring, explore local trails, enjoy the warm weather and get some exercise.

Cyclists are eligible to enter a contest and win a prize by taking a group or individual photo of staff that biked to work on May 20. Send the photo to adoll@dekalbparkdistrict.com with the names of each participant and the mailing information for the business. Deadline for photos is May 26. Each participant’s name will be entered into a raffle to be drawn on May 27.

Park district hires executive director

The DeKalb Park District has named Amy Doll, CPRP, as the district’s new executive director. The Board of Commissioners unanimously appointed Doll to the position. She had been serving as interim director since March.

Doll has been with the park district since 2014, when she was hired as the superintendent of recreation. In that capacity, she led initiatives including community special events such as Polarpalooza, Daddy-Daughter Date Night, Cardboard Boat Regatta and Howl-o-ween. Doll also led initiatives with recreation staff to bring online registration to the park district and implement new programs such as volleyball, pickleball and lacrosse.

Before her tenure in DeKalb, Doll worked more than 10 years with the Champaign Park District and three years with the Family YMCA of Northwest Illinois.

Doll holds the professional designation of Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) from the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA).

Six female actors wanted for comedy

Indian Valley Theatre is looking for six female adults for its next show, “Always a Bridesmaid.” Auditions for this comedy will be cold readings from the script and Indian Valley Theatre membership is not required to audition.

Auditions will be held 14 p.m. May 21 and 7-9 p.m. May 23 at the Sandwich Opera House, 140 E. Railroad, Sandwich.

“Always a Bridesmaid” will be performed at the Opera House, July 15-17. In this comedic romp, four friends have sworn to keep the promise they made on the night of their senior prom: to be in each other’s weddings … no matter what. More than 30 years later, these Southern friends-for-life are still making “the long walk” for each other, determined to honor that vow.

Casting will consist of four women in their late 40s, one in her 60s, and one in her late 20s. The characters are: Monette – late 40s, Southern-to-the-bone flirt; a little flashy and a little trashy; Charlie – late 40s, tree-hugging, Birkenstock-wearing, acerbic Southern free spirit; Deedra – late 40s, headstrong with a dry wit, no-nonsense judge, a Northern transplant; Libby Ruth – late 40s, hopeless romantic, sweet, Kari’s mother; Kari – late 20s, spunky Southern charmer; Sedalia – in her 60s or a little older, gregarious, energetic hostess.

For questions about auditions, email Gina Palmer, the director, at ginapalmer1@comcast.net. For questions about Indian Valley Theatre, e-mail indianvalleytheatre@gmail.com or call (888) 365-8889.
