Composting Workshop

A representative from SCARCE will talk about saving money, conserving water and creating nutrient-rich soil through backyard composting. Learn the dos and don’ts for success, troubleshooting, various compost bin options, and how to use your compost. Registration recommended. For more information, call (630) 653-7599.

Civil War Reenactment Weekend

10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Fischer Farm, 16W680 Old Grand Ave., Bensenville

$5, $3 children under 13

Step back in time 150 years during one of the most significant events in our history and see what life was like as a civilian and the trials and tribulations of those fighting in the war. There will be a rally for infantry drills in the morning and a skirmish in the afternoon as well as first-person presentations throughout the day. Meet Abraham Lincoln and Sojourner Truth, hear music, and learn what life was like for ordinary people who lived through a truly extraordinary time. There will be a firing of the cannon at 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. Concessions including hamburgers, hot dogs, soft drinks and more available for purchase.

 

Fine Art Fair

10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Naper Settlement, 523 S. Webster St., Naperville

Free

The Naperville Woman’s Club hosts its 58th annual juried Fine Art Fair, featuring more than 100 artists from around the country. The artists will display original artwork in clay, fiber, glass, jewelry, mixed media, metal, painting, photography, sculpture and wood. Entertainment will include Patchouli, Guitarra Azul and Chicago Sinfonetta’s Project Inclusion.

 

The Great American Campout

1 p.m.-11 a.m.

Greene Valley Forest Preserve, Green Road and 79th Street, Naperville

In addition to the rare opportunity to camp at this popular forest preserve, families will enjoy games, archery, a scavenger hunt, evening nature programs, a guided night hike and an egg-drop contest as well as dinner and s’mores by the fire and a continental breakfast. Families will camp in the forest preserve’s Thunderbird youth-group campground, which includes wooded and semi-wooded sites with picnic tables.

Concerts in Your Park

7 p.m.

George Pradel Park, 4519 Pradel Drive, Naperville

Free

The Naperville Park District’s summer concert series, Concerts in Your Park, will present Fletcher Rockwell. The group is known for its original songs and for clever versions of the most popular cover music, spanning everything from vintage Tom Petty and The Band to contemporary roots revivalists the Lumineers, Dawes and Mumford & Sons. Concert goers may bring their own food and beverages or may purchase food from food trucks on site.

Addison Uncorked

8-9 p.m.

Addison Historical Museum, 135 Army Trail Blvd., Addison

$20 suggested donation

The Addison Center for the Arts, Addison Historical Society, and Knights of Columbus offer the community a fun night of wine tasting, appetizers and live music. This event will be a collaborative fundraising effort for all who are over 21 years of age. For more information, call (630) 628-1433.

Concerts in the Park

7 p.m.

Lilacia Park, 150 S. Park Ave., Lombard

Free

The Lombard Park District hosts country night in Lilacia Park with the presentation of Wild Daisy, a band that plays current, upbeat country favorites. Wild Daisy’s three singers perform a variety of singing styles.

 

 

The Art of Rock and Disco-Record Album Art

10:30 a.m.-12 p.m.

Elmhurst History Museum Education Center, 120 E. Park Ave., Elmhurst

$5 for members, $7 for non-members

Disco or classic rock? There was an art to how this music was marketed, and album covers were important creative expressions of the artists. With a real DJ, participants will listen to the different sounds of classic rock and disco music and learn about how these artists expressed themselves through the artwork on their album covers. Families will then make their own album art. Appropriate for kids age 5-12 accompanied by an adult; no charge for the adult.
