DOWNERS GROVE

Plan calls for new food, drink tax to replace slipping sales tax revenue

Downers Grove village officials are exploring whether a new food and beverage tax can replace slumping sales tax revenue.

The proposed 1 percent tax would affect food and drink purchased at restaurants and pre-packaged foods sold in grocery stores. Lombard, Elmhurst and Naperville currently impose similar taxes.

Village estimates show that revenue from a food and beverage tax could bring in $1.6 million in revenue.

The village has been experiencing a steady decline in revenue from sales tax as shoppers make more purchases online, which is a national trend.
