State releases boating Infractions during holiday

While much attention is focused on drunk driving on a holiday, this year the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police participated in Operation Dry Water, a nationwide boating safety and boating under the influence awareness initiative.

During Operation, Dry Water and the 4th of July holiday weekend, the Illinois Conservation Police reported the following activity:

• 617 written warnings,

• 346 citations,

• 30 boating OUI (Operation Under the Influence) arrests,

• 1378 vessel inspections,

• 3 DUIs (Driving Under the Influence),

• 12 criminal/warrant arrests,

• 108 vessel/person assists, and

• 29 drug arrests.

Bike trail mapping app is launched

DuPage County launched a new web-based application that will provide navigation tools and information about the DuPage County trail system.

The DuPage Trails App showcases all trail routes in DuPage County. The app allows users to pinpoint parking lots, rest areas, restrooms, popular destinations, bike shops or emergency assistance facilities nearby.

The web app can also link to the County’s Citizen Reporter app, which can be used to highlight damage, problems or issues on the trails. The web app can be accessed directly atdupageco.org/trailmap or through the County’s Navigate DuPage app, which is available for iOS and android devices.

The web app was developed internally through a cooperative effort between the Division of Transportation and the Geographic Information Systems Department.

 

State water survey hosts FEMA mapping project meetings

The Illinois State Water Survey, on behalf of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), is hosting two meetings on July 27, to present the revised preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) and Flood Insurance Study (FIS) for DuPage County. The first meeting will be for local government officials from 1:30-3:30 p.m., and the second will be a public open house from 4-8 p.m. The open house will be held in the auditorium of DuPage County’s JTK Administration Building, 421 County Farm Road, Wheaton.

The meeting for local government officials will include presentations on the revised preliminary FIRM and FIS panels, including changes incorporated since they were originally presented in 2015. In addition, during the open house, state, federal and DuPage County staff will be available to help citizens locate their properties and answer questions. These staff members will offer expertise in engineering, GIS, floodplain mapping, floodplain management, Letters of Map Change, FEMA administrative procedures and flood insurance.

Residents living in or near special flood hazard areas, real estate and insurance agents, developers and representatives of lending institutions are encouraged to attend. In advance of the open house, FEMA has posted digital copies of the revised preliminary report materials at fema.gov/preliminaryfloodhazarddata.

The open house also marks the beginning of a 30-day public comment period. Comments may either be submitted at the open house or sent to Shelly Fuller, Illinois State Water Survey, 2204 Griffith Drive, Champaign, IL 61820-7463. All written comments must be received by Aug. 25.

Restaurant to serve ‘free’ lunch for charity

Texas Roadhouse in Naperville will host a benefit lunch aiding Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run, the single largest year-round fundraising vehicle for Special Olympics Illinois.

The public is invited to come for a free lunch between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. July 28. Just leave a donation at the table, and 100 percent of your donation will go to Special Olympics Illinois.

Texas Roadhouse is at 2856 American Drive, which is near the northeast corner of Route 59 and north Aurora Road in Naperville.

 

Free dance performances offered this summer

Élan Dance Company, the Naperville Park District’s pre-professional performing ensemble, is offering free outdoor performances for the community at a variety of events throughout Naperville.

At 7:10 p.m. July 22, Élan Dance Company will perform a pre-game show at the Chicago Bandits professional softball game at the Ball Park at Rosemont. Tickets are $7.25 and can be purchased online at www.chicagobandits.com. The dancers also will sing during the fifth-inning stretch.

Saturday, July 29 is National Dance Day, an annual event organized by the Dizzy Feet Foundation and Nigel Lythgoe, founder of the Fox TV Show, “So You Think You Can Dance.”

Élan Dance Company will join the celebration by performing the National Dance Day choreography at the Millennium Carillon at 11 a.m. July 29. The dancers will then teach the dance to anyone in the audience who would like to learn it. The final performance will be video recorded and submitted to the Dizzy Feet Foundation to be shared on social media and considered for inclusion in a National Dance Day recap on “So You Think You Can Dance.” This event is free and open to all ages. In the event of inclement weather, check the Park District’s Rainout Line at http://www.napervilleparks.org/cancellations for an indoor location. Participants should wear athletic clothing; dance shoes are optional.

On Aug. 8, the company will return to the Millennium Carillon for a 6:30 p.m. performance before the recital, which will feature guest carillonneur Lynnli Wang from Washington D.C.

Élan’s summer schedule will conclude with a performance at the Naperville Last Fling at 1 p.m. Sept, 2 at Naper Settlement.
