NAPERVILLE

Naperville Survey asks: How long should school day be?

A work group commissioned by Naperville Community Unit School District 203 concluded that younger students could benefit from additional instructional time each day and older students could benefit from starting school later, which is in alignment with recent recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics as well as the Centers for Disease Control.

School district officials are asking the community to weigh in by participating in the district’s School Calendar and School Day Survey. This survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete, and can be taken via email. Answers will be confidential. Reports will not identify individuals. No one in the school district will know who participates unless you identify yourself in open-ended comments.

By conducting this survey, District 203 is seeking to ensure the current school calendar and school day are designed to optimize student learning.

The survey closes on Oct. 18. Go to www.naperville203.org to find it. The district will share the findings and specific steps that may be taken as a result.

Lombard Church hosts organist in festival concert

The 10th season of Artist Series presentations at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lombard, continues 3 p.m. Oct. 23, with a Reformation Festival including organ, brass and chorus.

All Saints Day this year marks the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. In celebration of that event, the Reformation Festival at St. John’s will feature Michael Burkhardt as organ soloist and conductor of the festival chorus and brass. Internationally known for his innovative and inspiring hymn festivals and for his creative work with children, Burkhardt is in frequent demand as a choral clinician, organ recitalist and hymn festival leader. He is director of worship and the arts at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Livonia, Michigan, director of worship and the arts for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and artistic director of the Detroit Handbell Ensemble.

Included in the program at St. John’s will be choral works such as “Come Now, Prince of Peace,” “O Day Full of Grace,” “How Firm a Foundation,” “Go, My Children, With My Blessing,” and Martin Luther’s immortal, “A Mighty Fortress is Our God.” Brass accompaniment and congregational singing of familiar hymns will also be part of the event.

Burkhardt’s appearance is partially underwritten by a gift from the Fox Valley Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

An informal reception with light refreshments will follow the concert, during which the photography of Timothy Johnson will be on display and available for purchase.

The public is invited to attend the Festival event and the reception. No tickets will be sold; a free-will offering will be requested.
