DOWNERS GROVE

Village approves happy hours

Patrons of Downers Grove drinking establishments can enjoy a happy hour alcohol special, thanks to recent action by the Village Council that loosens restrictions on the practice.

The village and state previously outlawed all special daily alcoholic sales. But the state last July changed the law and Downers Grove followed suit, which it did not have to do. As a home rule municipality, Downers Grove has the right to enact ordinances that are more restrictive than state law.

But the changes allow for happy hour as long as:

  • The price of the drink is not changed during the time it is discounted.
  •  The period of time during which any drink of liquor is discounted does not exceed four hours per day and 15 hours per week, divided by the licensee in any manner he chooses.
  •  Notice of the discount during a specified time is posted on the premises or on the licensee’s publicly available website at least seven days before the specified time.

The board voted for the looser restrictions at the urging of local businesses.

Approval sought for beehive

You can learn a lot from bees, and Elmhurst College hopes to do just that if the city will give the college permission to install a beehive on campus.

College officials told the city that the hive and the beekeeping training will be used as a platform for the education and support of students, faculty, staff and the wider community members who are interested in the science.

If approved, the college would put a small beehive on the roof of the science building, and science classes would use it to study ecological issues and sustainability issues. Also, students

in ecology, environmental biology, invertebrate biology and zoology classes would get the opportunity to complement their studies with hands-on research experience. And, business majors would forecast and analyze the projected revenue from a single hive per year.

Bees, which have seen a massive decrease in population, are important to the general ecosystem and food chain. A beehive in Elmhurst could support environmental sustainability in the city.

If given the go-ahead, Elmhurst College expects to have the beehive installed in the spring of 2017.
