Most books sell for $1-$2.50, including recent best sellers at this annual Association of American University Women (AAUW) event. Collectors editions are priced a bit higher. There are many children’s books appealing to every age and interest. On the last day of the sale, books are sold by the bag for $10. Proceeds fund four $1,000 scholarships, given to Glen Ellyn and Wheaton high school seniors to attend the College of DuPage. On a national level, the AAUW sale’s proceeds fund women’s fellowships and research grants.

Lombard Garden Club Lilac Sale

Approximately 450 lilac bushes, some trees and 17 different cultivars will for sale. This project is the Garden Club’s largest annual fundraiser. Proceeds from the sale go to the beautification of Lombard and a scholarship for a Lombard student. For information, call (630) 495-0022.

Pink 5K

Help fight breast cancer in stride at the Oak Brook Park District’s annual Pink 5K Run/Walk. Past funds raised have supported local breast cancer outreach and screenings, donated to the Open Arms Breast Cancer Outreach Fund, Hinsdale Hospital Foundation. This year’s registration fees will help provide lifesaving cancer screenings to women throughout the greater Chicago area. The donation goal is $10,000. For more information, call (630) 990-4233. 

International Migratory Bird Day

Green Garden Fair

Purchase locally grown, certified organic seedlings and other items for this summer’s garden and receive green gardening/living tips from local environmental action organizations. Proceeds benefit the church’s ministries.

Victorian Memory and Mourning

Get ready for Memorial Day with a look back at how Americans have traditionally handled death, mourning and memorialization. Experience hands-on Victorian mourning artifacts and memorials from the collection of folklorist Sheila Riley. Discover what mysterious gravestone symbols really mean, then practice your knowledge in a guided walking tour of Naperville Cemetery. This two-hour program will be led by Riley, director of learning experiences at Naper Settlement. Recommended for ages 13 and up. Reservations are required. Call (630) 420-6010.

DuPage County Recorder Fred Bucholz will host an event dedicated to active and veteran military personnel. In appreciation of their service, Honor Rewards is a free reward program, which currently provides community discounts at more than 150 participating area businesses. Military personnel and local businesses subscribe for free, Enjoy Refreshments & Recorder Military Discharges.
