DuPage County forest preserves offer multiple ways to view fall colors

Fans fall colors can enjoy spectacular displays at Forest Preserve District of DuPage County programs next month whether hiking, biking, paddling or enjoying a hayride through some of the District’s 60 forest preserves.

“Our preserves provide DuPage County residents with a spectacular show of fall colors right in their own backyard,” said Forest Preserve District Commissioner Jeff Redick, District 2.

The district has set up a series of fall tours starting Oct. 5 with the St. James Farm Fall Colors Wagon Ride at 1 and 2 p.m. at St. James Farm, on Winfield Road just north of Butterfield Road in Warrenville.

A 30-minute tractor-drawn hayride will include tours of the buildings, natural areas and equestrian roots of this preserve. Rides are $5 for people ages 5 and up, children under 5 ride for free.

Cyclists can ride the trails on a Fall Colors Tour on Oct. 13 at Spring Creek Reservoir and Oct. 29 at the Canada Equestrian Center. Both events run from 9 a.m.-noon,

Visitors can learn about wildlife, plants, history and forest preserve features on a guided Fall Colors Hike  through four scenic fall landscapes including Meecham Grove (Oct. 14), Waterfall Glen (Oct. 15), Maple Grove (Oct. 18) and Fullersburg Woods (0ct. 26).

Paddlers can enjoy fall reflections on Oct. 15 on the West Branch of the DuPage River from Lions Park in downtown Winfield to Warrenville Grove. Paddlers can bring their own canoe or kayak to this free program or rent one for $20 per person.

Photographers can capture the beauty of fall on Nov. 5 by joining a naturalist and a photography instructor who will teach about nature and ways to capture beautiful images.
