COUNTY

Tollway repairs expected to be done by end of June

Work is expected to continue this weekend on the I-88 ramp to Highland Avenue. The ramp has been the site of lane closures and repair work the past couple of weekends.

Pavement repairs across all lanes of the Highland Avenue ramp necessitate lane closures as well as a detour for those traveling northbound on Highland Avenue.

Additional closures will be scheduled beginning June 24 for repair work to the left lane with the closure continuing for the majority of the weekend. The lane is scheduled to reopen by 7 a.m. June 27. During the week of June 27, lane closures will be scheduled to complete pavement work on the ramp. At least one lane on the ramp will remain open at all times, and both southbound Highland Avenue and through traffic movements will be maintained.

The ramp repairs are scheduled to be complete by the end of June. Information on the DuPage County Department of Transportation work is available at www.dupageco.org.

County is collecting old latex paint

DuPage County is collecting latex paint in an effort to help residents get rid of unwanted paint and produce paint that can be used again.

Residents can drop off their usable, unwanted latex paint free of charge. The paint must not have been frozen, must be less than 10 years old and has not been mixed with other products.

The paint will be filtered and re-blended into a variety of colors, types and finishes. Then it will be offered free to residents, businesses and nonprofit organizations in 5-gallon containers. While commercial enterprises can pick up the recycled paint, drop-off is limited to residents. Homeowners can drop off paint from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays through July 29 at the Woodridge Greene Valley Wastewater Treatment Facility, 7900 S. Route 53, Woodridge. Paint also can be dropped off during those hours on specific Saturdays: June 25, and July 9, 16 and 23.

For more information, contact DuPage County at (630) 407-6700 or the Public Works Department at (630) 985-7400 or visit www.dupageco.org/recyclingprograms.

Facility’s new name will honor retired judge

His wife’s struggle with Alzheimer’s disease inspired a retired DuPage County judge to donate to the DuPage Convalescent Center.

Because of his generosity, the DuPage County Board has voted to rename the center after the Honorable Ken Moy of Hinsdale. He has pledged to donate $2 million to the 368-bed facility, 400 N. County Farm Road.

The convalescent center offers long-term care and short-term rehabilitative services for hundreds of patients, most of whom are on Medicaid.

DuPage Convalescent Center Foundation officials say Moy’s donation will be the largest the group has received. The foundation was established in 1993 to provide support and supplemental funding to improve the quality of life for residents at the facility.

Moy served as a DuPage judge from 1996 until his retirement in 2007. He previously served as a member of the county board, winning election in 1984, 1988 and 1994.

Library challenge will help housing program

This summer, the Glen Ellyn Public Library is asking the community to join in a Read to Build program to help Habitat for Humanity. The library is challenging youngsters to read for 70,000 hours and adults to read 4,500 books. If these goals are met, the Friends of the Library and the Glen Ellyn Library Foundation will donate money to Habitat for Humanity to purchase new appliances for a Habitat homeowner.

In addition to supporting a worthy cause, the library will offer prizes to participants in the reading program. For more information, visit the library, 400 Duane St., Glen Ellyn.
