MEMORIAL DAY

Observances set May 30 for Memorial Day

Here is a roundup of Memorial Day activities in DuPage County.

Addison

Celebrate Memorial Day in Addison, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. May 30 at Village Hall, 1 Friendship Plaza. The village’s events start with a free pancake breakfast at 8 a.m hosted by Knights of Columbus and a Veterans Resource Fair at Indian Trail Junior High, 222 John F. Kennedy Drive. The Community March to the cemetery will leave from the school at 9:30 a.m. A cemetery observance will be held at 10 a.m., followed by a march to Village Hall, 1 Friendship Plaza, where a ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. A veterans’ resources fair will be held until 1 p.m. in Village Hall. The Addison Historical Museum, 135 W Army Trail Blvd., will be open from 9-11 a.m.

Elmhurst

The city’s 98th annual parade will step off at City Centre from Third Street at 9:30 a.m. May 30. The parade will head south on York Street to Second Street, veer east along Robert Palmer Drive through the underpass and west back to York Street, south on York Street to Church Street, west on Church Street to Prospect Avenue and north on Prospect Avenue past the Veterans Memorial, ending in Wilder Park. Following the parade will be a military ceremony in the park.

Glen Ellyn

Glen Ellyn residents are invited to meet at 11 a.m. May 30 at Glenbard West High School’s Duchon Field for a ceremony honoring veterans. The football field is at 670 Crescent Blvd.

Naperville

Hosted by the Judd Kendall VFW Post 3873 and American Legion Post #43, Naperville’s annual Memorial Day Parade will kick off at 10:30 a.m. May 30. The parade will steps off from Jackson and West streets, travel east to Washington, north to Benton, then east to the SS Peter & Paul Church parking lot. The Millennium Carillon Memorial Day Recital will be held at 10 a.m. at the Millennium Carillon, 443 Aurora Ave.

Villa Park

The newly renovated Cortesi Veterans Memorial Park, 320 E. Kenilworth, will be unveiled during ceremonies at 11 a.m. May 30. Villa Park VFW 2801 will host a light lunch after the dedication at the post, 39 E. St. Charles Road.

COUNTY

Family campground opens for the season

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s campground — Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville — will open to campers May 26.

The 64 campsites may be reserved Friday and Saturday nights through Sept. 25 as well as Thursday nights, May 26 to Sept. 5. To accommodate holiday campers, sites also will be available the following nights: May 29; June 26 through July 3; and Sept. 4.

Campground sites have electricity and can accommodate visitors with tents, trailers or motor homes. Each has a gravel parking pad, fire ring and picnic table, and can hold up to eight people, two tents and one vehicle. The campground has restrooms, showers, hand-operated water pumps and a dump station. Firewood costs $5 per bundle, cash only; outside firewood is not allowed.

Permits cost $20 per site per night for DuPage County residents and $30 per night for nonresidents. Permit holders must be at least 21 and remain onsite. Senior citizens may receive one free permit per household for one consecutive two-night stay. WESTMONT

Cash prizes offered in barbecue completion

The Westmont Lions Club will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Red, White & Bar-B-Q festival May 27-May 29 in Ty Warner Park, 700 Blackhawk Drive. Admission is free.

The RWBBQ offers $16,000 in prize money, making it the largest KCBS (Kansas City Barbeque Society) Bar-B-Q competition in Illinois and one of the biggest in the Midwest. The event includes professional and amateur competitions.

Along with the competition, there will be a carnival, music by local bands, craft vendors and barbecue vendors who will sell food from sample sizes to full slabs of ribs. The festival opens at 4 p.m. May 27, 9 a.m. May 28 and 7 a.m. May 29. For more information, visit www.westmontbbq.com.

LOMBARD

Park district makes green plots available

The Lombard Park District has garden plots available for rent, allowing the public to grow a vegetable garden or flowers.

The plots are east of Madison Meadow at 150 W. Madison St. They measure 20-by-40 feet. Fees are $42 for residents and $79 for nonresidents. Gardeners are responsible for the upkeep of the plot and removal of all materials after the growing season. Visit www.lombardparks.com or call (630) 620-7322.

WHEATON

Friday car shows return to downtown

A new season of Vintage Rides car shows has begun on Fridays in downtown Wheaton.

The car shows take place on Front Street, and the road will be closed between 211 Front Street and Cross Street between 6-9 p.m. to accommodate the display of classic cars. The shows are held Fridays through Aug. 26. On June 3, the event will be moved to Hale Street between Front and Wesley streets to make way for the Taste of Wheaton. There will be no show July 1.

VILLA PARK

High school students invited to exam study night

The Villa Park Public Library, 305 S. Ardmore, will keep its doors open an hour longer May 26, and invites high school students to study for their final exams at the library. All students are invited to study 5-9 p.m., but the final hour, 9-10 p.m. will be reserved for high school students only.

The library has free Wi-Fi, and on study night will also have pizza, snacks and pop on hand to get students through the night. Pizza will be served at 8:15 p.m. Therapy dogs will visit from 7-8 p.m.

Local business celebrates grand opening, renovation

Members of the Villa Park Chamber of Commerce, Village President Deborah Bullwinkel and local dignitaries will help celebrate Route 64 Auto Repair’s grand opening and renovation. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. at the business, 8 W. North Ave.

Family owned and operated, Route 64 Auto Repair is a full-service preventive maintenance and automotive repair center.
