Aurora police investigate two shootings of two women

Aurora police are continuing to seek information about two shootings that occurred within an hour of each other and left two women injured.

According to Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli, the first shooting occurred around 2:15 a.m. on Feb. 26 near Fourth Avenue and State Street in Aurora.

Four people were inside of a white 2009 Chevrolet Malibu that was traveling southbound on Fourth Avenue when shots rang out, Ferrelli said.

A 22-year-old woman, who was a passenger inside the vehicle, was struck when someone fired several shots toward the vehicle. The shooter was apparently standing with several people on the west side of the street when the shots were fired.

None of the other three people in the Malibu were struck. Those three people included the 23-year-old male driver and two other passengers: a 29-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, Ferrelli said. No one could provide further suspect descriptions.

Following the shooting, the Malibu’s driver drove directly to Rush-Copley Medical Center to seek treatment for the injured woman. On his way to the hospital, he was involved in a minor one-car traffic crash at Montgomery Road and Waterford Drive.

Aurora Fire Department Paramedics rushed to the crash scene and finished transporting the woman to Rush-Copley, Ferrelli said

A home along with a van parked in the 400 block of State Street were also struck during the shooting incident, but no other injuries were reported, Ferrelli said.

Less than an hour after the first shooting occurred, a second woman arrived at Rush-Copley Medical Center suffering from a gunshot wound to her eye.

According to Ferrelli, the woman, 20, had been the passenger in a 2008 turquoise Ford Explorer being driven by a 20-year-old man when the incident occurred.

The driver told police he was traveling eastbound on New York Street near Asbury Drive when an unknown make and model vehicle pulled up beside the Ford Explorer.

Police said someone inside the vehicle allegedly fired shots toward the Explorer, striking the woman.

The driver of the Explorer drove straight to Rush-Copley Medical Center, and after initial treatment, the woman was transferred to a suburban Chicago facility.

Ferrelli said there is no additional suspect description or information about the type of vehicle the shooter was in. He noted that the pair were largely uncooperative with police.

“At this time, we do not believe the incidents to be related and, although no definite motive has been established, street gang motivation has not been ruled out in either,” Ferrelli said.
