Kane County Calendar of Events May 23 – June 9

The City of Aurora will honor the service men and women who gave their lives for our country during the annual ceremony and parade beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Memorial Day.

THROUGH MAY 28

Vets Week Aurora, continues at various Aurora locations. Events included the  You’re a Grand Old Flag Art Reception (May 23), a Drive Thru BBQ (May 24), an Iraq/Afghanistan GWOT Vet Recognition (May 25), Cruise Night (May 26), Names added to Phillips Park Vet Memorial (May 27) and Aurora Memorial Day Parade (May 28). THROUGH JUNE 3

Once the Musical, Paramount Theatre, 23 E. Galena Blvd., Aurora. Once is based on the Oscar-winning movie and is an eight-time Tony Award-winning musical, including Best Musical, Best Actor and Best Book. Party in the Park, Garfield Park, 817 Forest Ave. , Aurora, 5-8 p.m. Simply Destinee Youth Center’s annual fundraiser is a fun, family-friendly evening of music and activities at Garfield Park. Enjoy a sundae at Banana Split and a portion of all proceeds will be donated to the mouth inspired dance team promoting suicide prevention & awareness.  Information: 630-256-3730.

Moonlight Tour of Farnsworth House, 14520 River Rd., Plano, 7 p.m. Discover Mies van der Rohe’s celebrated Farnsworth House in a new light during a special Moonlight Tour. Super SciTech Saturday: Racing Rivers, SciTech Hands-On Museum, 18 W. Benton St., Aurora. Up to four children admissions to the general museum are free with a paying adult. Hands-on activities available for $1 or all activities for $5. Information: 630-859-3434.

ScribbleMonster Concert, Sugar Grove Public Library, , 125 S. Municipal Drive, Sugar Grove, 11 a.m.-12 p.m., free. Kick off the Summer Reading Program with a high-energy, play-along rock concert with Jim and Jayne of ScribbleMonster — comprised of five Chicago-area performers with a history of creating, teaching and performing music, comedy and theater.

St. Charles Fine Art Show,  Riverside Drive , Downtown St. Charles. The 20th annual show showcases the work of 100 juried fine artists in a variety of mediums. Aurora Memorial Day Parade, David L. Pierce Art & History Center, 20 E. Downer Place,  Aurora, 11:30 a.m.  The City of Aurora will honor the service men and women who gave their lives for our country during the annual ceremony and parade on Monday with a pre-parade ceremony – In Memory of Many, In Honor of All – at 11:30 a.m. at the reviewing stand in front of the David L. Pierce Art and History Center. The parade steps off at noon from River and Benton streets. Information: 630-256-3370.

St. Charles Memorial Day parade, downtown, 6th Street to Riverside Avenue, 10 a.m. Memorial Service directly after parade behind Municipal Building at the Riverwalk Freedom Shrine. VFW/American Legion Open House 311 North 2nd Street, Unit 109 St. Charles. For all service veterans and their families including active and inactive club members. Information: 630-329-6444.

Elburn Memorial Day Parade, American Legion Post 630 building, 112 N. Main Street. 10 a.m. at Lions Park and ends at  Blackberry Township Cemetery. The ceremony includes the reading of “Flanders Field” and the reading of the names of local veterans buried in the area. The Elburn Boy Scout Troop 7 hosts a Memorial Day pancake breakfast from 7-9:30 a.m. at the American Legion Pos

Elgin Memorial Day programs. The Elgin Patriotic Memorial Association, in cooperation with the city of Elgin, will sponsor a variety of programs for Memorial Day: Mount Hope Cemetery, 1001 Villa St., 8:45 a.m., Lakewood Memorial Park, 30W730 U.S. Route 20, 9:15 a.m., Elgin Veterans Memorial Park, 274 N. Race to Market 5K and WellBatavia Expo, Peg Bond Center, 151 N. Island Ave., Batavia, 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Join Batavia Mainstreet and Batavia Park District they celebrate the 23rd Opening Day of the Batavia Farmers’ Market. Race to Market in the 5K and check out the WellBatavia Expo health and wellness fair.

Kane County Flea Market, , Kane County Fairgrounds, 525 S. Randall Road, St. Charles, noon-5 p.m. Saturday, 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.  One of the longest running, antique and collectible Flea Markets in the world with hundreds of dealers inside, outside, and under sheds.Information: 630-377-2252.

JUNE 3

Mid-American Canoe and Kayak Race, McCullough Park, 101 W. Illinois Ave., Aurora, 7 a.m.-2 p.m. This historic, amateur canoe/kayak race is for paddlers of all ages and abilities, featuring 11 canoe divisions, eight kayak divisions and one open (non-competitive) division. Two race options are available, 10 miles from St. Charles and 6 miles from Batavia. Lunch, T-shirt, shuttle and goodie bag included. Post-race party and awards ceremony, too. Get Hooked on Fishing at Lake Patterson, Oakhurst Forest Preserve, 1680 Fifth Ave., Aurora, 8 a.m.-noon, free, ages 5-16.  Volunteers will help teach kids and parents about the sport of fishing and the underwater ecosystem in this hand-on, family-friendly event. Necessary Targets, Albright Theatre Company, 100 N. Island Ave., Batavia, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays, $15-$20. A psychiatrist and a journalist travel to Bosnia to interview and try to help women refugees.
