Kids excited to trick or treat

Kids excited to trick or treat

Aurora’s crisp fall weather and its high percentage of young children are among the factors that placed it near the top of large cities across the country for the best trick or treating.

Last year, Aurora was ranked 12th, but this year it moved up to the third best spot beating out nearby Elgin and Joliet that ranked 7th and 13th in a survey conducted by SmartAsset, a financial technology company that provides users with advice on personal financial decisions.

SmartAsset rated 252 cities on its trick or treating using factors such as single family housing density, population of children age 14 or younger, violent crime rate, property crime rate, median home value, average temperature, and the likelihood it will rain on Halloween.

Data was obtained from local police departments, the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Database, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the U.S. Census Bureau.

The survey zeroed in on each city’s children population–because towns with lots of kids are more likely to hand out candy.

Other factors such as number of single family homes per square mile were considered, because more homes signify a greater opportunity for gathering more treats.

The survey authors also determined that 60 degrees Fahrenheit is the ideal temperature for trick or treating.  Hence more Western and Midwestern cities appear at the top of the list because “it just isn’t the same” to trick or treat in 80 degree weather.

Below is a list of official trick or treating times in cities throughout DuPage and Kane counties.  Cities without official trick or treating hours encourage residents to trick or treat during daylight hours.

Residents are encouraged to turn on their front porch light if they want to pass out candy on Halloween.

Trick or Treating Safety Tips

A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on the neighborhood rounds.

If older children are going alone, plan and review the route that is acceptable to you.

Parents should agree on a specific time when children should return home.

Only go to homes with a porch light on and never enter a home or car for a treat.

Children and adults are reminded to put electronic devices down, keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street.

Motorists should watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs.

Motorists should enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully and watch for children in dark clothing.

Instruct children to travel only in familiar, well-lit areas and avoid trick-or-treating alone.

Children should not to eat any treats until they return home.

All costumes, wigs and accessories should be fire-resistant.

If children are allowed out after dark, fasten reflective tape to their costumes and bags to make sure they are visible.

When buying Halloween makeup, make sure it is nontoxic and always test it in a small area first.

Remove all makeup before children go to bed to prevent skin and eye irritation.
