Kane voter signup runs until Nov. 4 election day

Citizens of Kane County will be allowed to register to vote all the way up to the Nov. 4 General Election.

Kane County Clerk John A. Cunningham announced last week  that the grace period for registration has been extended through election day. The extension applies only to the November 2014 General Election.

Grace-period registration will begin Wednesday, Oct. 8 at the Kane County Clerk’s Office and will be extended until the polls close on Tuesday, Nov.  4.

Two forms of current identification are required. Voters must vote after their voter registration is processed. The Kane County Clerk’s Office is located in Building B at the Kane County Government Center, 719 S. Batavia Avenue (Route 31), Geneva.

Elgin may have first marijuana dispensary

It looks like Kane County’s first medical marijuana dispensary will be in Elgin.

According to local media reports, Salveo Health and Wellness received approval for a special use permit in a 6-1 vote from the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission to operate a dispensary at 1330 Crispin Drive, Unit 215, in the Fox Bluff Corporate Center, located at Bowes Road and McLean Boulevard.

The Elgin City Council has yet to make the final approval, but the council has approved the rules and guidelines that allow that use.

According to state law, Kane County can have up to two medical marijuana dispensary facilities.

WCC’s Powers honored as top NIU history alum

Amy Powers, an assistant professor of history at Waubonsee Community College, has been selected by NIU’s Department of History as its alumnus of the year.

Powers, of DeKalb, obtained a Ph.D. in history from NIU in 2007 and has taught classes at Waubonsee since 2003. She will be formally presented with the award this fall.

Powers was recognized for numerous academic and scholarly achievements and her continuous commitment to teaching and students.

“She had a familiar, easygoing relationship with her students that must have been based as much on out-of-classroom activities – written comments, conferences and so on – as what happened in class on any given day,” Foster said.

Naperville’s ‘Last Fling; gets under way Aug. 29

Last Fling, the Naperville Jaycees’ four-day, end-of-summer street party in downtown Naperville will begin Aug. 29 and run through Labor Day on Sept. 1. The celebration will run from 5 to 11 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29; 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on both Saturday, Aug. 30 and Sunday, Aug. 31; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 1.

United Way Cardboard Boat race on Saturday

The Fox Valley United Way hosts its annual Cardboard Boat Race from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at Phillips Park’s Mastodon Lake in Aurora.

Interested individuals or groups are invited to, build a cardboard boat and join the fun. Free cardboard available. Human-powered and mechanical boat categories. Junior, Adult, Business, Non-Profit and Community divisions. Trophies and special awards, including Most Spectacular Sinking.

Arboretum’s popular Tails on Trails returns

Back by popular demand, Morton Arboretum’s Tails on the Trails returns on Sept. 13 from7 a.m. to sunset.

Dog lovers can enjoy  a day meandering the Arboretum’s 16 miles of hiking trails. Also check out canine demonstrations, dog adoption agencies, shelters and local vendors. All dogs must be current with vaccinations, be social with other dogs and on a leash.

Cost is $5 per dog with Aboretum admission.

Most of Starved Rock state park still closed

The second phase of storm damage cleanup at Starved Rock State Park is now under way and work will continue over the next month.

All interior trails remain closed at Starved Rock including St. Louis Canyon because of storm damage that occured in July.

The boat ramp, roadway and west picnic area remain closed. The Starved Rock Visitor Center is open with regular hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Starved Rock Lodge is open. French Canyon from Visitor Center is open.
