Aurora

Aurora Records Clerk congratulated for quick response

Aurora police recently congratulated Records Clerk Christy Davis for her commendation on her efforts to assist Aurora Telecom operators on Dec. 26 during the Fox Valley Mall fight.

Davis, a former operator herself, was working her normal assignment in records and when she heard the call for service at the mall go out, she immediately went to the 911 Center and assisted in any way she was needed.

Since she had the knowledge and experience, she was able to pitch in calling other agencies to request assistance, monitoring officer radio traffic, handle other 911 calls separate from ones associated with the mall, and dozens of other duties.

The seamless flow of information from the 911 Center, along with the actions of the APD Officers on-scene with assistance from over 70 other officers from other agencies, were key reasons why no one was seriously hurt and over 1000 people were evacuated.

“While the operators regularly assigned to the 911 Center did an outstanding job, Davis’ actions rose to the next level as, without prompting, she jumped in to help the operators handle an extremely intense situation,” police said.

No injuries in Aurora apartment fire

At 9:58 p.m. on Feb. 21, the Aurora Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 400 block of north Lake Street on the city’s near west side. Upon arrival firefighters found a four-story multifamily apartment building with heavy smoke and fire showing from the window of a third floor apartment unit.

The fire was initially called in as an activated fire alarm then several occupants in the building called 911 stating there was a fire. It took 37 firefighters 30 minutes to extinguish the fire.

The residents of the unit where the fire occurred were relocated to another

apartment within the building as their apartment was deemed uninhabitable. All other occupants were able to remain in the building.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and there were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters. The total dollar loss is estimated at $300,000.

Oswego sergeant heads to D.C. for Police Week

Every year, National Police Week takes place in Washington, D.C., to pay tribute to those in law enforcement who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. One of the events that takes place is the Police Unity Tour.

Oswego Police Sgt. Bastin, a 12-year veteran of the department and member of the Oswego Police Honor Guard, will be taking part in the tour this year.

“I have attended both state and national police memorials numerous times and participate in police funerals as part of the Oswego Police Honor Guard. I think it is important to raise awareness of the sacrifice made by fallen officers and the price that is paid by their families,” he said.

This May, Bastin will join other law enforcement officers from all over the

country and embark on a journey that consists of a three day, 250-mile bicycle ride

starting in Somerset, New Jersey, through Philadelphia, then Baltimore, ending in

Washington, D.C.

Each participant is required to raise a minimum of $2,000. Bastin is riding with the Southern California Chapter as there are no chapters in the Midwest area.
