Kendall County

Sheriff’s Office has successful medication disposal program

In January, the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office was awarded a grant from CVS Pharmacy to install a Drug Collection Unit located in the lobby of the Public Safety Center at 1102 Cornell Lane in Yorkville.

The Drug Collection Unit Drop Box Program is to provide the residents with a safe and environmentally responsible way to dispose of unwanted, unused or expired medications, including all prescription medications. Since January, residents have dropped off 35 pounds of prescription drugs with the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office.

The Drug Collection Unit is open to the public from the hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. excluding County holidays. In the event a request is needed for after hours, citizens are urged to call the Sheriff’s Office number at (630) 553-7500, Ext. 1145, and make a request for an after hour drop off. Drugs can be dropped off with no questions asked.

Kendall County residents and CVS/pharmacy customers can also inquire about the Medication Disposal for Safer Communities Program at the toll-free phone number (866) 559-8830 or visit www.cvs.com/safercommunites.

Sheriff Dwight Baird said, “This self-service medication drop box allows the public to safely and anonymously dispose of unwanted or unused medications. By disposing of them in this safe manner, we keep them out of the hands of teens and people who may choose to use or sell them to others for unintended purposes. We are also avoiding contaminating water sources by not flushing them down the toilet. This program has been very successful and we encourage people to continue to utilize the drop box.”

Retailers pass tobacco compliance check

On Feb. 16, the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office completed the second of three rounds of compliance checks to be conducted on all tobacco retailers within unincorporated Kendall County. A total of seven tobacco retailers were inspected and all seven were found to be following the Illinois tobacco laws.

The compliance checks are performed to determine if local tobacco retailers are complying with state minimum age tobacco laws which prohibit the sale of tobacco to persons under the age of 18.

With the help from a grant awarded by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission’s “Kids Can’t Buy ‘Em Here” Tobacco Enforcement Program, Community Policing Deputies educate tobacco retailers in unincorporated Kendall County on minimum age tobacco laws and the importance of verifying the age of customers before selling age restrictive products such as tobacco

Deputy’s warn of “Grandparent Scam”

Sheriff’s Office Senior Services Deputy has received some calls from seniors claiming they have been receiving calls from someone claiming to be friend or relative. The caller says there is an emergency and asked to send money.

But beware, there’s a good chance this is an imposter trying to steal money.

How the scam might work, the phone rings from a number you don’t know or it comes up unavailable. You answer and the voice says, “Hi Grandma or Hi Grandpa”, hoping that you have a grandson. If you say, “David, is that you?”, the scam is on. From here the scammer can go many ways but usually it’s something like the grandson is in jail or been in a car accident and needs money. They may also have someone else come on the phone posing as Law Enforcement or an Attorney, no matter what they will want you to send money and send it right away, they will be very high pressure and mean.

What to do: Hang up and call a family member. Never give any personal information or wire money.

Aurorans charged with residential burglary

On Sept. 14, 2015, Kendall County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the 0-10 Block of Hillcrest Road, Unincorporated Oswego Township, for a report of a residential burglary.

It was reported that a door had been forced open, and electronics taken from within the residence.

Sheriff’s detectives began an investigation. The State’s Attorney’s Office ultimately charged three individuals in the case. Two 17-year-old juveniles, both of Aurora, and Kiara Pineira, a 23- year-old female from the 300 Block of Woodruff Street, Aurora, were all charged with one count of Residential Burglary; a Class 1 felony.

The two juveniles were referred to juvenile court, and a warrant was issued for Pineira, with a bond of $50,000, with ten percent to apply.

Pineira was taken into custody on Feb. 22, without incident. She posted bond securing her release, pending her next court appearance.
