State Rep. Wheeler forming Education Advisory Council

State Rep. Keith Wheeler (R-Oswego) is accepting applications for interested parents, educators and community members (residing in school districts 115, 308, 304, 129, 302 and 303) to serve on his Education Advisory Council, which serves families in Illinois’ 50th District — including portions of Montgomery, Oswego, Plano and Yorkville, as well as Aurora, Batavia, Campton Hills, Elburn, Geneva, St. Charles and Sugar Grove. The council will hold quarterly meetings throughout the year, beginning in September. Specific needs exist for community members to serve on the K-12 Classroom Educator Committee, the K-12 Parent and Taxpayer Committee, and the Higher Ed Committee. A K-12 Administrative Committee, to be comprised of superintendents and school board presidents, also is being formed. Weis to seek fourth term as state’s attorney
Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis, a Republican who has held the office since 2006, reported that he intends to seek a fourth term of office, and run in the Republican primary next March. Weis earned a Bachelor of Science degree from North Central College, in 1994, and earned his Juris Doctorate law degree from the Northern Illinois
University College of Law, in 1997. He then began his legal career as an assistant state’s attorney for Kendall County, also serving as chief felony prosecutor.

New law gives disabled veterans property tax relief
A report stated that Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a bill into law, effective Aug. 29, that expands the Disabled Veteran’s Standard Homestead Exemption, and reduces or eliminates the assessed value of a property owned by a veteran who is disabled. Andy Nicoletti, Kendall County’s supervisor of assessments, reported that veterans considered
30 to 49 percent disabled will receive a $2,500 exemption off their assessment, while those considered 50 to 69 percent disabled will receive a $5,000 exemption. Eligible veterans need to obtain and complete an exemption form from Nicoletti’s office, 111 W. Fox Street, Yorkville. For more information, call (630) 553-4146.

Oswego
Park District to host science fiction double feature
The Oswegoland Park District will host, “A Midnite Movie Double Feature,” to be held at the pavilion at Fox Bend Golf Course, 3516 Route 34, Oswego. A pair of science fiction films — “The Mole People” and “Beast of Yucca Flats 2: Beast Hits Miami” — will be shown. Tickets are $8 (adults) and $6 (students and seniors), and are

Benefit concert to honor late philanthropist
The Loaves & Fishes Concert To End Hunger, a benefit concert in honor of the late Patti Greene — described as a compassionate hunger philanthropist — will be held Sept. 19, beginning at 7:30 p.m., at the Arranmore Farm & Polo Club, 34 Rance Road. The concert will feature the Steve Chapin Band, which features original members of the Harry Chapin Band. General admission tickets are $35; bringing lawn chairs and/or blankets is encouraged, and outside food is allowed (but no alcohol). Cash bars and food trucks will be in operation. Caregiver Education series continues at senior center
The Oswego Senior Center, 156 E. Washington Street, continues its Caregiver Education Series with “Hands-on Care: Caregiver Safety,” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 9. The program will focus on best practices, safety tips, and techniques for hands-on caregiving to maintain safety for all involved.  Information regarding available equipment to assist with lifting and transferring also will be provided. Travel business celebrates 30th anniversary

Travel Services of Yorkville will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a free open house at its office, located at 801 N. Bridge Street (Route 47), from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 1. Police department warns against illegal golf cart riding
A report stated that the Yorkville Police Department has received complaints regarding the riding of golf carts on city streets, as well as on bike paths and other common areas throughout the city. The police department reportedly issued a statement to remind residents that riding golf carts in such areas is an illegal activity, and that police will enforce the law when alerted to such activity. Witnesses interested in reporting any violations are encouraged to call (630) 553-4343.

Sheriff’s Office BBQ to benefit Special Olympics
The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office will host a summer barbecue at the courthouse parking lot, 807. W. John Street, from 4-6:30 p.m. Aug. 27. Fay’s Bar-B-Que will feature three dinner options: a two pork-chop dinner, a combo dinner with one pork chop, and a quarter-chicken or half-chicken dinner. Sandwich

Library hosting all-day book event
The Sandwich Public Library, 925 S. Main Street, will host “Blind Date With A Book” — an all-day event — on Aug. 28. Throughout the entire day, wrapped books will be on display, with only a description of the book’s genre hinting at the story inside. The event is open to ages 18 and up; registration is required. For more information, call (815) 786-8308. In addition, September is library sign-up month, and anyone signing up on Sept. 10 will receive a special prize for becoming a library member.

Plano
Farnsworth house holding tours through November
The Farnsworth House, 14520 River Road, a glass box house designed by noted architect  Miles van der Rohe in 1945 and constructed in 1951, is open for tours through November. Tours are available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are required, and can be purchased online at www.farnsworthhouse.org or by phone (630) 552-0052; registration is
highly recommended. The cost is $20 (plus a $2.50 online convenience fee; $5 convenience fee if purchased on-site.
