Fall fashion show offers ‘Autumn in Paris’

Kendall County’s Senior Services Associates will host the 8th Annual Kendall County Fall Fashion Show, beginning at 11 a.m. Sept. 20, at Pipers Banquet, 1295 Butterfield Road, Aurora. This year’s theme for the annual fundraiser is “Autumn in Paris,” and will feature the newest fashions available through area retailers. The event includes local celebrity models showcasing clothing for all ages, a luncheon, entertainment by Johnny Gray, a silent auction featuring hundreds of items, a Heads or Tails 50/50 raffle, a Balloon Pop raffle and more. Sheriff’s Office mourns loss of retired police dog

The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office announced that one of its retired K-9 deputies, named K-9 Ari, recently passed away. The dog (born in 2003) was trained in narcotics detection, tracking lost persons, and in handler protection — and was assigned to deputy Greg Shadle of the Patrol Division in 2007. Shadle adopted K-9 Ari as his personal pet after the dog was retired from duty in October 2011.

 

Sandwich

Series of programs continues at library

The Sandwich Public Library, 925 S. Main Street, continues its series of adult-oriented programs in September with The Essential Edgar Allen Poe at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 30. The program, presented by professional storyteller William Pack, will focus on the tragic life and macabre stories of the celebrated poet and author; registration is required. Banned Books Week (Sept. 27 through Oct. 3) will feature displays, interactive spectacles, and various resources intended to provide knowledge regarding why books are banned, censorship issues, and reader’s rights. In addition, Banned Books Movie Matinee will be held at 6 p.m. on Sept. 28 and 29, and Oct. 1 and 2. The event features movie adaptations of previously banned books, as well as a display of those books — including reasons for the banning of each title — as well as free popcorn. Indian Valley Community Band begins new season

Indian Valley Community Band begins its 29th season with rehearsal on Sept.14. The band is always looking for new members and welcomes students through retirees. The group meets weekly at the Sandwich Middle School band room, 600 Wells Street, Monday nights from 6-7:20. Can’t make it by 6? No problem, you can drop in late and play along when you get there. All instruments are needed. There are no auditions.

 

City puts park benches up for sale

As part of its ongoing beautification project, the city announced it is selling park benches to businesses and individuals. The 6-foot-long benches — currently being placed throughout the downtown area for viewing — will be accompanied by a commemorative plaque, on which a business name or memorial message can be engraved. The price of each bench is $1,100; a portion of the funds collected will be donated to the Sandwich Opera House. Payments are due no later than Oct. 1. Oswego

School district approves tentative budget

A report stated that Oswego School District 308 unanimously approved a tentative budget for the 2015-16 school year. Because of a reported $8.3 million increase in General State Aid, the district would benefit from a $3.3 million surplus in the 2015-16 budget. The report also stated that District 308 is expected to see total revenue of nearly $174.8 million. A $441,000 surplus is expected for the current budget, still to be audited.

 

Village to host recycling event

The village announced it will host the 2015 ECO Commission Reuse & Recycle Extravaganza from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Oswego Public Works Facility, 100 Theodore Drive. Acceptable items include bicycles, books, clothing, electronics, eyeglasses, keys, lawn mowers, LCD/LED/plasma TVs, packing materials, scrap metal, school supplies, suitcases and toys, among numerous others. paints will not be accepted; antifreeze and motor oil will be accepted at Keith’s Car Care, located at 78 Stone Hill Road. Park district to present Hitchcock radio play

The Oswegoland Park District will present a radio play, “The Trouble With Harry,” a comedy written by legendary movie director Alfred Hitchcock, at 7 p.m. Sept. 26 at The Little White School Museum, located at 72 Polk Street. Tickets are $8 (adults) and $6 (students and seniors), and are available online at www.oswegolandparkdistrict.org or at the door on the day of the show. Plano

Special meeting addresses formation of park district

According to a report, a special meeting recently was hosted by Plano Mayor Bob Hausler to discuss the topic of forming an official park district. The report stated that Hausler said the city would not directly be involved in the possible formation of a park district, but that he believes the special meeting could result in the formation of

a small advisory group, which would address the city’s Parks Committee taking over parks and recreation. The committee is currently headed by Ald. Melody Herreid, and residents who attended the meeting reportedly will contact Herreid in order to schedule a future meeting for further discussion.

 

Newark

American Legion to rent space for garage sale

The Newark American Legion announced it is renting space for the Newark Town-wide Garage Sale, to be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 18 and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 19 at the legion hall, located at 13000 Fennel Road. The offer allows participants to sell items in an indoor, air-conditioned setting. Renters will be held responsible for renting their own booth, managing all transactions, and removing unsold items at the sale’s conclusion. Anyone interested in reserving a space should call Patti Smith at (815) 585-2774. The cost is $10 per space; booth set-up will take place from 6-8 p.m. Sept. 17. Everyone is welcome to attend the sale, and lunch items will be available for purchase both days.
