Kendall County

County receives pair of ComEd grants

A report stated that two grants — worth $10,000 apiece — received by Kendall County from ComEd will be utilized in the areas of green space improvement and public safety. One grant reportedly came as part of the ComEd Green Region Program, and the other was received through ComEd’s new Safe Communities Program. Funds from the latter grant are set to be used in the purchase of seven automated external defibrillators and seven watertight cases to be used in Kendall County Sheriff’s Patrol Division squad cars. Funds received from the Green Region Program grant will be used to restore Maramech Forest Preserve, located south of Plano (off of Griswold Springs Road), and Tucker-Millington Fen, located on the western edge of the county in the proximity of Millington.

Girls Scouts offering Gold Award Workshops

The Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois (covering 16 counties, including Kendall), is offering Gold Award Workshops — open to all high school girls who register as Girl Scouts — for the cost of $4 per girl. In conjunction with next year’s celebration of the Gold Award Centennial, the intent is to encourage more girls to become National Women of Distinction through earning the award. Workshop topics include steps to earn the award, development of a “Take Action” project, and details about how the reward provides benefits regarding college applications, resumes and future career opportunities. American Legion Warrior Relief Gala to benefit veterans

Yorkville American Legion Post 489 will hold its second Warrior Relief Gala from 6:30-11 p.m. Oct. 17 at Timber Creek Inn & Suites, located at 3300 Drew Street, in Sandwich. Funds raised will benefit area military veterans. The event will feature guest speaker Allen Lynch, a Medal of Honor recipient, and live music by the Yorkville Big Band, singer/songwriter Jonny Gray, and American English, a noted Beatles tribute band. Library hosting ‘Threads & More’ group session

The Yorkville Public Library, 902 Game Farm Road, will hold the next meeting of its monthly “Threads & More” group from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 6. The group (for ages 18 and up) meets on the first Tuesday of every month. Anyone interested in crochet, knitting, needlepoint, sewing and quilting is welcome, regardless of ability level. Harry Potter movie marathon coming to library

As part of its Youth Events series, the Sandwich Public Library will present Hogwarts House Party & Movie Marathon (an all-day event for ages 12 and up) on  Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 24. Each Saturday, the library will show two Harry Potter movies, and provide food and wands. Attendees are encouraged to dress as their favorite characters from the films. In addition, Zip Line Races (for ages 6 and up) will be held at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 16. Materials will be provided for participants to craft a racer and then put it to the test. Montgomery

Village offers free paper shredding service

The village announced that it will offer free paper shredding during its monthly recycling event from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 17 in front of the Montgomery Police Department, 10 Civic Center Ave. The opportunity is in conjunction with the village’s recycling program, typically available on the third Saturday of each month. Paper shredding will be limited to two banker-type boxes per vehicle. Documents may include staples, but binder clips and rubber bands must be removed. During the event, unwanted electronics (excepting tube televisions) will be accepted — including appliances, all types of batteries and metal. Annual cemetery walk to include costumed actors

The Montgomery Historic Preservation Commission will host the 7th Annual Cemetery Walk from 7-8:30 p.m. Oct. 7 at Riverside Cemetery, located at 414 N. River Street. Guests will be led through the cemetery in small groups, departing about every 10 minutes, to visit the gravesites of early pioneers and other area residents. This year’s event features actors in authentic costumes portraying some of the people buried, including a shoemaker who lived in what now is Settlers Cottage. Tours will begin near the area of River and Taylor streets on the south side of the cemetery. Parking is available along River Street, and at the playground located at the north end of Montgomery Park. Attendees are encouraged to bring flashlights. The event is free; a rain date is set for Oct. 8. In addition, an indoor re-enactment of the cemetery walk (as part of the village’s senior program) will be held at 10 a.m. Oct. 13 in the Village Hall Board Room, located at 200 N. River Street. Library sets date for lit fest, book fair

The Oswego Public Library District and the village’s Cultural Arts Commission will present the fourth annual Oswego Literary Festival from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Oswego Public Library, located at 32 W. Jefferson Street. The event, free of charge, will feature 30 area authors, book signings, a book sale hosted by the Friends of the Library, a presentation by Sourcebooks, Inc., live music performed by students of the River Academy of Music and Art, and more. Senior Center offers free lunches for first-time visitors

The Oswego Senior Center, located at 156 E. Washington Street, is offering first-time guests (ages 60 and up) a free lunch, served at noon every Monday and Thursday. The lunch consists of a full meal prepared and catered by Upper Crust Catering of Yorkville. Those interested must RSVP by calling (630) 554-5602 by 10 a.m. on Fridays to sign up for Monday lunches, and by 10 a.m. on Wednesdays for Thursday lunches. A $5 donation is suggested for returning lunch patrons.
