Deputies Offer Traffic Stop Safety Tips

Getting pulled over by a deputy can be a stressful and uncomfortable experience especially if you have never been pulled over before. What you do during the traffic stop can help make the stop safe for you and the deputy.

Here is what to do when being stopped:

  • Use your turn signal and pull your vehicle over to the road side or to a safe location. In Illinois, you have the right to proceed to a public place that is well lit before pulling over.
  • Remain in your vehicle, unless the deputy directs you to get out and simply comply, it is the law.
  • Turn the interior light on if its dark outside and roll down your window all the way
  • If you have a special communication needs and have a visor alert card in the vehicle point to your ear and the visor alert card, so the deputy knows the best way to communicate with you.
  • Keep your hands in view, preferably on the steering wheel until instructed otherwise.
  • Provide your license, registration, and insurance card, but do not retrieve or reach for these documents until instructed, so the deputy can safely witness your movements.
  • Remain civil and answer any questions honestly. Ask any questions you may have based on what the deputy tells you. Obey legal commands from the deputy.
  • If you are issued a citation and have questions regarding the citation, ask the deputy. Do not argue with the deputy and do not attempt to have the ticket resolved during the traffic stop. You will have your opportunity to plead your case if you decide to go to court.

Man held on shooting faces additional charges

An Oswego man who was shot by police last year after threatening to massacre partygoers near his home has been charged with allegedly throwing feces on a deputy and battering him.

According to Kendall County deputies, Taylor James Cano, 26, of the 300 block of S. Fordham Ave. in Aurora and formerly Oswego, was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer stemming from an incident that occurred around 5:50 p.m. Nov 2 at the Kendall County jail where Cano is already in custody on charges related to the August 2015 shooting incident.

Deputies responded to the jail after a physical altercation broke out between Cano and a deputy. The Kendall County Sheriff’s Department said that during the altercation, Cano allegedly threw feces on the deputy and battered the deputy.

Cano was initially charged in August 2015, after calling 911 to report that a massacre was going to happen and that he was going to shoot himself in the street.

Oswego police reported that when officers went to Cano’s residence, they found Cano outside his home with a rifle. Cano allegedly raised the rifle toward the officers. According to the release, the man did not comply with orders from the officers who, fearing for their safety, fired at him. Cano was stuck in the torso and police gave first aid to him. The Oswego Fire Protection District took him to an area hospital for further medical attention.

In addition to two counts of attempted murder, Cano was also charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

Oswego

Upcoming Traffic Alerts on Illinois Route 71.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is planning to activate the new traffic light signals along Illinois Route 71 between Orchard and Wolfs Crossing roads starting November 2, 2016, weather permitting. Please use extra caution as motorists become familiar with the signals.

IDOT is also anticipating barrel removal on Route 71 on or before Nov. 14, opening up all lanes in the roadway. Oswego Police began placing a message board on the roadway starting Nov. 6, as a reminder to travel the posted speed limit.

Oswego Police will be conducting extra patrols along Route 71 once the roadway fully opens. Specifically, police will be focusing on violations involving speed, seat belts and cell phone usage.

Additionally, the public should anticipate a strong police presence enforcing safe driving in the school zone in front of Oswego High School due to a higher volume of inexperienced drivers that are in the area on a daily basis.
