Aurora

Dozens of drivers cited for illegal cell phone use

Our Traffic and Community Policing divisions conducted a citywide distracted driving detail on Friday, April 28 as part of the first-ever Illinois Distracted Driving Awareness Week. The detail focused on roadways in which there have been a high number of crashes.

In total, 108 traffic stops were made. 84 citations for unlawful use of an electronic device (a fancy word for illegal cell phone use/texting and driving) were issued. Nine citations were issued for other various offenses. In addition, officers issued 8 verbal warnings and 15 written warnings.

Just as interesting, more than 50 additional motorists were observed using their cell phones during periods in which all of the detailed officers were already on traffic stops.

The officers who were acting as spotters (those in unmarked units) were able to capture the license plates of those motorists and we will be mailing out warning notices to those drivers.

We will continue to stage distracted driving details in our ongoing efforts to reduce crashes and increase safety.

Oswego

New restaurant coming to downtown area

The owners behind Potter’s Place and Jimmy’s Grill in downtown Naperville look to bring their unique brand of dining and entertainment to downtown Oswego.

The proposed Mexican-themed, casual restaurant will include a signature two-level outdoor dining patio that will add to the energy of Washington Street and the ambiance of downtown Oswego and will be located at 63 W. Washington.

“I am beyond excited to announce this addition to our downtown nightlife. The opportunity to partner with successful restaurateurs who pride themselves in creating an experience for diners will add a new vibrancy to Washington Street, giving people extra options which will mean more visits. Nothing draws a crowd quite like al fresco dining in the downtown. This new spot will sport the largest outdoor patio on which to enjoy your friends, great food and beverages, and our awesome downtown,” said Village President Gail Johnson.

Operation Prom warns of drinking and driving

Oswego East High School (OEHS) recently conducted an Operation Prom crash site scenario and simulation with students on hand to see the results of underage drinking and driving.

Operation Prom took place at 8:15 a.m. in the parking lot at OEHS. Juniors and seniors attended the event, as their prom day nears. It was also streamed on Facebook Live and can be viewed at sd308.link/OEHScrashsim17.

Students, parents, and first responders created the crash site scene to represent the horrors that could result from drinking and driving.

OEHS administrators planned and organized the successful event, enlisting the help of Matt Epperley, assistant director of district student services for Community Unit School District 308.

“The event was executed well as a result of the planning and coordination with the school, local, and state law enforcement, the fire protection district, and other agencies,” Epperley explained. “School District 308 very is fortunate to have strong partnerships with each of them. It’s great to be able to provide such a real-life simulation that allows students to see and learn. We may have saved a life today.”

District 308 Schools get top ranking

For the first time in the history of Community Unit School District 308, a district high school has made it into the US News and World Report rankings for Top High Schools. In fact, both Oswego High School and Oswego East High School were ranked as Top High Schools in 2017.

“That both of District 308’s high schools achieved Top High School status is a prestigious honor that speaks volumes about the commitment of the district’s administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents, and the communities we serve,” said District 308 Superintendent of Schools Dr. John W. Sparlin.

Only one-fourth of the schools that U.S. News and World Report evaluated this year were awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals in the 2017 rankings. The nation’s 22,000-plus public high schools were ranked on school-specific enrollment data, college readiness, student ethnicity, location, school type, and the results of state assessments and Advanced Placement (AP) tests.

Oswego High School (OHS) ranked number 56 in the state and 1,718 in the nation, giving it silver medal status. Forty percent of OHS students take AP courses. Half of the OHS student population is male and half is female, while 35 percent are students of color and 26 percent are economically disadvantaged. OHS scored 32 on the College Readiness Index.

Oswego East High School (OEHS) ranked number 57 in the state and 1,779 in the nation. OEHS also received silver medal status. The AP participation rate at OEHS is 48 percent, the student population is 50 percent male and 50 percent female, 48 percent are students of color, and 26 percent are economically disadvantaged. The school’s College Readiness Index is 31.5.
