Lake County 

 Lake County nets grant to assist with justice reforms 

Lake County was among 20 jurisdictions selected to join the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation’s Safety and Justice Challenge, a national, $100 million initiative designed to reduce over-incarceration, and racial and ethnic disparities, in their local justice systems. Through the program’s Innovation Fund, Lake County will receive a $50,000 grant to provide support and technical assistance in designing and implementing justice reforms on the local level. Lake County’s innovations will focus, in part, on intensive case management to divert a group of high utilizers of the Lake County Jail from re-arrest and re-incarceration, thereby reducing jail housing costs. Dickinson Hall to host program on key events of 1995

As part of its Lectures & Learning Series, Dickinson Hall, 100 E. Old Mill Road, will present Jim Kenney: 1995 — Five Events and the Beginning of the Future at 10:30 a.m. March 3. The program will feature Common Grounds Executive Director Jim Kenney, who will discuss author W. Joseph Campbell’s book, “1995 — The Year the Future Began.” Topics include the O.J. Simpson murder trial, the Oklahoma City bombing, former President Bill Clinton’s affair with a White House intern, the Dayton negotiations settling the Bosnian War, and the rise and fall of the internet browser, Netscape Navigator. Mundelein 

Fremont School nets grant for energy upgrade plans 

The village reported that Fremont School District 79 recently was awarded a $35,000 Illinois Energy Now (IEN) grant for its Public Sector Energy Efficiency Project Proposal by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus on behalf of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. The Metropolitan Mayors Caucus administers IEN funding to public agencies through its Public Sector Energy Efficiency program. The project approved for funding involves a building automation upgrade at Fremont Elementary School, 28908 N. Fremont Center Road. The automation upgrade will replace a 20-year-old system with upgraded technology, introduce a web-based management system, allow the district to more efficiently manage climate, and increase building performance and energy savings. Gurnee 

Gurnee Volunteer Fair to be held at police station 

The village announced that the Gurnee Volunteer Fair will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. Feb. 28 in the Community Room at the Gurnee Police Station, 100 N. O’Plaine Road. The purpose of the event is to match volunteers with a variety of organizations in Gurnee and the surrounding Lake County area. Volunteer options include helping the homeless, providing support for domestic abuse victims, fighting to end cancer, rescuing animals, empowering women, supporting veterans, helping local businesses and more. Highland Park 

City of Highland Park seeks nominations for pair of community awards 

The city announced that the Character Counts Steering Committee currently is accepting nominations for the 2017 Robert Barnard Character Counts Awards. The awards recognize and honor students, residents and members of the business community for consistently demonstrating six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. In addition, the Human Relations Commission (HRC) is accepting nominations for the 2017 Humanitarian Award. The award was established to recognize an individual who has rendered outstanding service to the Highland Park community. Areas of service include education, charitable work, philanthropy, environmental advocacy, public policy, and promoting the welfare of the community and its residents. Round Lake Park Dist. to host Daddy & Daughter Date Night 

The Round Lake Area Park District will host Daddy & Daughter Date Night from 5-8 p.m. Feb. 25 at Maravela’s Banquets, 4 Washington Street, Fox Lake. The event includes dinner (roast sirloin of beef au jus, chicken fingers, mostaccioli with marinara sauce, mashed potatoes, sweet corn, dinner rolls, salad bar, soft drinks, milk, coffee and tea), dancing, entertainment and an ice cream sundae bar. All young ladies in attendance will receive a goody bag, and dads will receive a digital photograph via email to preserve memories of the evening. Admission is $36 (residents) and $41 (non-residents) for dads; $23 (residents) and $28 (non-residents) for daughters ages 8-13; and $18 (residents) and $23 (non-residents) for daughters ages 7 and under.  Hawthorn Woods 

Hawthorn Woods Couple earns Citizen Service Award for saving family 

The village announced that Hawthorn Woods residents Doug and Susie Wheeler received the Citizen Service Award during a recent Village Board meeting. Mayor Joseph Mancino, along with Lake Zurich Fire Chief John Malcolm and Deputy Chief Rick Johnson, presented the award to the Wheelers for their life-saving efforts in recognizing a house fire on North Quentin Road, on Jan. 2, and immediately alerting the family inside and evacuating them to safety.
