Mathews nets Jackson Award from Lake County Bar Assoc.

Lake County State’s Attorney Michael G. Nerheim announced that Assistant State’s Attorney Reginald C. Mathews, Chief of the Gang and Narcotics Division at the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, recently was recognized by the Lake County Bar Association with the Justice Robert H. Jackson Award for distinguished and exemplary public service through his commitment to justice as a prosecutor in Lake County. Mathews, a lifelong resident of Lake County, was appointed Chief of Gang and Narcotics in 2012. He graduated from the Louisiana State University Paul M. Herbert Law Center and also earned a bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University. In addition, Mathews donates time to causes such as Meals on Wheels and Teen Court.

 

Lake Bluff

Legion Post 510 names delegates for high school program

Lake Bluff American Legion Post 510 is sponsoring 15 high school students from Lake Bluff and Lake Forest to attend the Illinois Boys State and Illinois Girls State educational programs at Eastern Illinois University, in Charleston, in June. The Boys State 2017 delegates are Emmet Brady, Jay Grieve, Ben Hans, Victor Kolcan, Brendan Manfred, Finn Michaelis, Samuel Pasquesi and David Tanna. The Girls State 2017 delegates are Tiffany Duong, Freda Hasselbring, Madyllen Kung, Kathryn Lotharius, Lydia Puryear, Margaret Slaughter and Sarah Tiba. As delegates to the five-day State programs, the students — all finishing junior year in high school with a 4.3/5.0 grade-point average and recommended by their high school counselors — will gain experience in national, state and local government, meet with civic leaders, attend motivational meetings, participate in leadership and team-building programs, and interact with other delegates. In addition, the delegates will appear in the Lake Bluff Fourth of July Parade and report their program experiences to parents and Post 510 members in September.

 

Grayslake

Heritage Center to host special World War I program

The Grayslake Heritage Center & Museum, 164 Hawley St., will host a special program, featuring actor and historian R.J. Lindsey, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the United States’ entry into World War I at 2 p.m. April 1. Lindsey will portray Carr Van Anda, Managing Editor of the New York Times during World War I. As Van Anda, Lindsey will present a detailed photo exhibit about the Lusitania, a British ocean liner torpedoed by a German submarine in 1915, and World War I. Lindsey also will recall other major events covered by Van Anda during his storied career, including the Russo-Japanese War, the Chicago Cubs’ 1908 World Series victory and the sinking of the Titanic. The museum’s galleries will be open before and after the program. A good-will donation of $3 (adults) and $1 (children) is suggested. Mundelein

Police Dept. to host Latino Citizens’ Police Academy

The Mundelein Police Department, 221 N. Lake St., will host the Latino Citizens’ Police Academy, beginning at 7 p.m. April 6. Classes will run every Thursday for 10 weeks, culminating with a graduation ceremony at 7 p.m. June 8. The program, open to citizens (ages 18-55) who live and/or work in or near the village, will examine and demonstrate various aspects of the day-to-day operations of the police department. In addition, other educational topics related to the ever-changing laws pertaining to the immigration problem, will be covered. The Latino Citizens’ Police Academy will predominantly be conducted in Spanish. Highland Park

Village to begin major infrastructure projects

The city announced that its 2017 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) is underway with an aggressive schedule to complete approximately $12 million worth of infrastructure design and construction projects. As one of the city’s four core priorities, infrastructure investment is a major component of Highland Park’s annual, five-year fiscal year budget and work plan. A major CIP project scheduled to begin in May is the annual Road Rehabilitation Program. The project focuses on repair and maintenance of the city’s asphalt and concrete streets. In addition, sidewalk repairs and replacements will begin in June. The annual repair program addresses tripping hazards and replacement of deteriorated sidewalk panels. Residents will be notified in advance of the construction schedule and any planned road closures. Village earns Tree City USA recognition

The village recently earned recognition from the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA. The Tree City USA program has four requirements: that the recipient has either a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least 42 per capita, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation on a yearly basis. The village will be presented with a Tree City USA flag by the Arbor Day Foundation, and will recognize the designation during its Arbor Day observance on April 28. Island Lake

Village to host annual pancake breakfast/egg hunt

The village announced the the annual All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast & Egg Hunt, sponsored by the Island Lake Area Lioness Club, will be held from 8-11:30 a.m. April 8 at Island Lake Village Hall Gym, 3720 Greenleaf Ave. The Egg Hunt (for ages 8 and under) will begin at 10 a.m., and is free for all participants. The event also includes a 50/50 raffle, with the drawing to be held at 11:30 a.m. (winner need not be present). Proceeds will go toward the Lioness Club’s scholarship fund. In addition, all unused food from the breakfast will be donated to the Island Lake/Wauconda Food Pantry. The cost is $6 (ages 8 and up), $3 (ages 3-7 and seniors) and free (ages 2 and under).
