Nerheim named 2017 State’s Attorney of the Year

Lake County State’s Attorney Michael G. Nerheim was named the 2017 State’s Attorney of the Year by the Illinois State Crime Commission at an awards ceremony on June 21. Nerheim also was named State’s Attorney of the Year in 2014, in recognition of his efforts in building initiatives to reduce opioid and heroin deaths, as well as reducing the demand and supply of prescription and illicit drugs. Nerheim co-founded the Lake County Opioid Initiative (LCOI) in 2012. Since that time, LCOI has been proactive in prevention education surrounding heroin and opioid misuse and abuse, conducting many forums across Lake County to educate students, medical professionals, educators and law enforcement officials on the dangers, signs and symptoms. In addition, Nerheim is collaborating with task forces in the battle against child sex trafficking. For more information, call 847-377-3000 or visit www.lakecountyil.gov.

Lincolnshire

Village ups sales age to 21 for tobacco products

The Lincolnshire Board of Trustees unanimously voted to update the village’s tobacco ordinance, increasing the sales age for all tobacco and nicotine products from 18 to 21. The ordinance change was initiated by the Lake County Health Department in early May, and included information from the Tobacco 21 Coalition, which cited a report from the Centers for Disease Control stating that nearly nine of 10 cigarette smokers first tried smoking by age 18. Increasing the purchasing age to 21 is seen as one of several strategies shown to reduce and prevent youth tobacco use. In conjunction with the ordinance change, the Lincolnshire Police Department has begun an educational campaign with all tobacco vendors in the village, and will work with the businesses to ensure compliance.
