Lake Bluff

History Museum to host program on epic day of rail travel

The Lake Bluff History Museum will host “A Transportation Miracle,” a program presented by Norm Carlson — president of the Shore Line Interurban Historical Society and managing editor of its quarterly magazine, First & Fastest, and its “Dispatch” series of publications — at 2 p.m. Feb. 26 in the Board Room at Village Hall, 40 E. Center Ave. The program will examine the 28th International Eucharistic Congress, held at Mundelein Seminary on June 24, 1926. On that day, five railroads combined to provide more than 300,000 passenger trips carrying people to and from the seminary, with Lake Bluff serving as a transfer point for travelers from Chicago and Milwaukee. The result was 80,000 trips through Lake Bluff on that day. Copies of Carlson’s publication, “A Transportation Miracle,” will be available for purchase ($20 softcover; $30 hardcover) at the presentation, and proceeds will be shared with the Lake Bluff History Museum. Admission is free, but a $5 donation is suggested. Registration is recommended. To register, call (847) 482-1571 or send an email to events@lakebluffhistory.org. Highland Park

City bans sale and use of coal tar pavement sealants

The Highland Park City Council recently approved a ban for the sale and use of coal tar products in Highland Park. The decision was based on findings of the city’s Natural Resources Commission (NRC), which concluded that coal tar sealants have a negative impact on public health and the environment. The overall justification of the ban states that coal tar driveway sealants are widespread pollutants of water, creating major health threats. As a result of the decision, all pavement sealant professionals must secure an annual license from the city before performing any pavement sealing. For more information, including how to ensure that contractors are licensed, call the city manager’s office at (847) 926-1000 or visit www.cityhpil.com.

Wasik will discuss his new book, “Nikola Tesla: Creativity and the Soul of Innovation,” which tells the compelling story of how Tesla created radio, the modern electrical grid, robotics and wireless/remote control. In addition, Feb. 25 will be the last day to view the museum’s exhibition, “Maps, Motors & Memories,” which explores the history of local service stations, gas stations, automotive dealerships and auto industry milestones. A good-will donation of $3 (adults) and $1 (children) is suggested. For more information, call (847) 543-1745 or visit www.villageofgrayslake.com.
