Army Corps of Engineers to begin landfill restoration project

The city announced that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), in conjunction with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IPEA), will begin a cleanup and restoration project in June at Landfill 1, located at the northwestern corner of Fort Sheridan on property owned by the U.S. Army Reserve (southern portion) and the City of Lake Forest (northern portion). The project will consist of the removal of landfill contents and disposal of the material at a permitted landfill in Zion. After landfill contents are removed, the parking lot and grass area will be returned to existing conditions on the Army Reserve portion of the property. The landfill area on the Lake Forest property will be restored as a natural ravine, consistent with the city’s ongoing ecosystem restoration project. The ravine will feature a stable slope from the access road to the ravine floor. During construction, trucks will be operating from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and will access the Lake Forest portion of the property by using Highway 41 via Westleigh and Sheridan roads, and the Army Reserve portion via the Army Reserve property gate at the Lake Forest access road.
