 Children’s Advocacy Center breaks ground for Healing Garden

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office reported that the Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center (LCCAC), 123 N. O’Plaine Road, Gurnee, recently hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for its Healing Garden. LCCAC, a nonprofit organization committed to providing a safe environment for child victims of abuse by helping to successfully prosecute offenders of child abuse without causing further trauma to the victims, raised a total of $80,000 to undertake the Healing Garden project. The garden is intended to serve as a place for comfort, healing and reflection for child victims of crimes, and will feature newly installed green lawns, open spaces and privacy fencing. In the first six months of 2016, LCCAC has handled 261 child sexual abuse cases, 52 physical abuse cases, 28 witness to abuse cases, 121 cases in which the alleged offender is a relative, and 218 cases in which the victim was 12 years old or younger. City to host 11th Annual North Chicago Community Days

The city announced that the 11th Annual North Chicago Community Days will be held Aug. 5, 6 and 7 on the grounds of City Hall, 1850 Lewis Ave. The event includes food vendors, live entertainment and line dancing from 5-9 p.m. Aug. 5, and continues on Aug. 6 with the 5K Color Run & Fitness Walk (8 a.m.), the Community Days Parade (10 a.m.), the Wheels of Lake County Car Show (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.), food vendors, free giveaways, live entertainment, raffle prizes, a Kids Zone, bingo and a 3-on-3 basketball tournament (all beginning at noon), and Concert on the Lawn (7:30 p.m.), featuring Sweet Diezel Jenkins. A fireworks show is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. Community Days concludes on Aug. 7 (beginning at noon) with food vendors, live entertainment, Kids Zone and Concert on the Lawn (6:30 p.m.), featuring a reunion of The Tommies. City Hall parking lot to be closed for resurfacing project

The city announced that the parking lot located directly behind City Hall, 220 E. Deerpath Road (between Oakwood and Forest avenues), will be closed for asphalt pavement removal and replacement, beginning Aug. 8. The project is estimated to be completed by Sept. 2.  Venetian Night & Block Party to include fireworks display

The village announced that the 9th Annual Venetian Night & Block Party will be held on Aug. 6. The Block Party — featuring this year’s theme, “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere on the Chain” — will be held outside (beginning at 6 p.m.) near Dockers Restaurant, 33 W. Grand Ave., and includes food, beverages and a live DJ. The lighted Venetian Night Boat Parade, held on Pistakee Lake, will begin at 7:30 p.m. near Famous Freddie’s Roadhouse, 510 S. Park Ave. Cash prizes will be awarded to boats based on creativity, lighting, decorations and costumes. In addition, the Fireworks Finale (launched above the lake) will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m. The Fox Lake Parks and Recreation Department will offer free shuttle service to and from the event from four locations (Millennium Park, Lakefront Park, the Community Center and Village Hall) in 15-minute intervals from 6-10:30 p.m. Admission is free. Lake Zurich

 Applications available for fall session of Citizens Police Academy

The Lake Zurich Police Department, 200 Mohawk Trail, is accepting applications for the fall 2016 session of its Citizens Police Academy. The academy, an educational and informational program consisting of classes and discussions designed to provide an overview of various areas of law enforcement in the village, will be held from 6:30-9:30 p.m. on Tuesday nights, beginning Sept. 13 and running through Nov. 22. The program is free, and open to individuals (ages 21 and up) who live or work in Lake Zurich. Advance registration is required, and class size is limited. In addition, applicants will be subject to a background check. Applications are available at the police department and online at www.lakezurich.org/police. Registration deadline is Aug. 26. Mundelein

 Pair of Mundelein High grads place first at national competition

The village reported that Mundelein High School Class of 2016 graduates Monika Bowser and Kelly Vander Ploeg recently earned a first-place finish during the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) National Competition, held in Atlanta, Ga. Bowser and Vander Ploeg competed in the Public Service Announcement category, and were named winners for a 30-second promotional video they produced about the positive impact of sports. The video showcased actual footage of Mundelein Mustangs sports action, coupled with a voice-over by football head coach Larry Calhoun. The pair of girls competed in the FBLA event during each of their four years as high school students, but this marked the first time they emerged as place-winners. Bowser will continue her education by studying business at the University of Texas, while Vander Ploeg will study business and Spanish at Hope College, in Michigan.

 

Grayslake

 Alleghany Road to close for railroad crossing repair

The village reported that Metra will close Alleghany Road to through traffic from Peterson Road to Route 120, beginning at 9 a.m. Aug. 5 and reopening in the late afternoon on Aug. 7. The road closure is necessary in order for Metra to repair the existing railroad crossing. Local traffic will be allowed from Peterson Road to the Metra railroad crossing, and from Route 120 to the railroad crossing. The railroad crossing will be closed to all traffic.
