Lake County Health Dept. launches pilot program to battle inmate addictions

The Lake County Jail and the Lake County Health Department announced the launch of a Vivitrol Pre-Release Pilot Program, part of the Health Department’s newly expanded Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) program that recently received a $325,000 grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration. Vivitrol is a non-addictive drug that helps to reduce cravings for alcohol and opioids. The drug was approved by the FDA in 2006 for the treatment of alcoholism, and approved in 2010 for the treatment of opioid addiction. Inmates who voluntarily express an interest in the Vivitrol program will undergo an assessment and education process to determine if they are appropriate for participation. Those eligible will begin receiving addiction treatment services in the jail, and after they are released. The program’s intention is to treat inmates while incarcerated, and continue to treat them once they return to the community in order to reduce the likelihood of returning to jail.
