Deerfield

Village, American Legion seek donations to aid military vets

The village and Deerfield American Legion Post 738 are inviting residents to participate in, “Give Where You Live: Deerfield,” a village-wide service campaign designed to make a difference in the lives of area military veterans. Spearheaded by Deerfield Mayor Harriet Rosenthal, the campaign is collecting donations through Veterans Day (Nov. 11). Items needed for the project include non-perishable food, clothing (including sweat suits, socks and underwear), small appliances and household items (including toiletries), gift cards to popular chain restaurants (including McDonald’s, Subway and Dunkin’ Donuts) and monetary donations. Donated items can be delivered to the Deerfield Police Department, 850 Waukegan Road, prior to Veterans Day, or to Village Hall, also at 850 Waukegan Road, on Veterans Day. Volunteers will then work together — along with Mayor Rosenthal — to make no-sew fleece blankets, assemble care packages, and write letters of thanks and encouragement to area veterans from noon to 3 p.m. Nov. 11 at Village Hall. Volunteer service activities are suitable for all ages. Donations are earmarked for West Deerfield Township Food Pantry, Midwest Veterans Closet, the VA Federal Health Care Center and COOL Ministries. For more information, contact Communications Director Mary Anne Glowacz at (847) 794-7501 or via email at mglowacz@deerfield.il.us — or visit www.deerfield.il.us.
