Village’s Fall Leaf Collection Program ending soon

The village announced that its annual Fall Leaf Collection Program will continue through Nov. 18. Residents who do not mulch or bag their leaves can rake leaves to the curb or carriage walk line the night before scheduled pick-up. Leaves should be placed in piles no greater than 5 feet in length and as close to the curb as possible — not in the street or on carriage walks or sidewalks. Grass clippings, branches, sticks, rocks and mud cannot be included with raked leaves. Using vacuum hose machines, Public Works Department crews will make one pass by each house in the village each week during the remainder of the program. Residents should not park their cars on the street the day of pick-up. After Nov. 18, any remaining leaves must be bagged, with a yard waste sticker adhered, for regular refuse collection on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. To view a map of scheduled pick-up days, visit www.deerfield.il.us. For additional information, call the Public Works Department at (847) 317-7245.

City explores expansion of library, relocation of Youth and Senior Services

A report stated that the city and the Highland Park Public Library are exploring a possible expansion of the library, located at 494 Laurel Ave., to better meet community demand for space and services as well as improve parking and traffic flow. In addition, the city also is exploring the relocation of Youth and/or Senior Services to an expanded library facility. Youth Services is currently housed in the Firehouse, located at 1830 Green Bay Road, and Senior Services is currently housed at the Highland Park Senior Center, 54 Laurel Ave.. The Firehouse facility, a multi-purpose, renovated fire station, is in need of significant capital improvement. The Senior Center facility, a renovated, 1929 residential property, poses several service challenges, including parking limitations, accessibility within the facility, and limited space for programming. For the purpose of expansion, the city is considering land acquisition of two properties immediately east of the library (444 and 446 Laurel Ave.), both of which are for sale by one owner and under contract with the city. During its recent meeting, the Highland Park City Council approved the residential retail contract for a total of $1.55 million. Purchase of the properties would make facility and/or parking expansion more feasible for the city. Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rottering said that including Youth and/or Senior Services in a library expansion project would provide, “a way to better serve residents of all ages in a convenient, easy to access, state of the art facility.” For more information, call the City Manager’s office at (847) 926-1000 or visit www.cityhpil.com/libraryexpansion.
