 Job Center to host employment workshop for military vets

The Job Center of Lake County, 1 N. Genesee St., Waukegan, will host an employment workshop for military veterans, entitled, “Federal Application Friday: 10 Steps to a Federal Job,” from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 24. Sponsored by the Illinois Department of Employment Security, the workshop will provide information on how to obtain federal employment, from start to finish, and will feature guest speaker Kevin Jones from the Navy Fleet and Family Support Center.  Village to host preventive health screening event

The village announced that Life Line Screening, a leading provider of community-based preventive health screenings, will offer a screening event from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 27 at the Lakefront Park Building, 71 Nippersink Boulevard. Five screenings will be offered to scan for potential health problems, including stroke/carotid artery screening (related to blocked arteries, a leading cause of stroke); abdominal aortic aneurysm screening (related to ruptured aortas); heart rhythm screening: atrial fibrillation (related to irregular heartbeat, closely tied to stroke risk); peripheral arterial disease screening (PAD, related to hardening of the arteries in lower extremities); and osteoporosis risk assessment. The screenings will take 60-90 minutes to complete. A wellness package, which includes all five screenings, is available for $139 per person.  LCDOT project forces temporary Washington Street closing

In conjunction with the Washington Street Underpass Construction Project, the Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) will temporarily close Washington Street (at the railroad crossing west of Lake Street) in order to raise the railroad track at the grade crossing and roadway approaches. The closure of the crossing will begin at 9 p.m. June 17. During the closure, local traffic will have access to the Metra station entrance, west of the railroad tracks. Washington Street will be closed to all traffic from the Metra station entrance to Lake Street. The detour route is, Washington Street to Route 83 to Rollins Road to Hainesville Road. City announces start of Community Photo Contest

The city announced that its Community Photo Contest is underway. The contest is being held in conjunction with Highland Park’s new tagline: “Live with heart. Lead with passion.” The city is seeking photos to help visually capture the dedication of its residents and the unique character of the community. Photos will be accepted in the following categories: Environmental (sustainable practices, open spaces, parks and wildlife); Architectural (urban design, cityscapes and landmarks); People Portraits (residents participating in city-sponsored events, organizations and classes); and Community Life (volunteering, street/nightlife, celebrations arts and culture). A winner will be selected in each category, and will be featured in the August edition of the Highlander newsletter. Photo submissions must include a category, and a completed photo release and waiver form (available at www.cityhpil.com/photowaiver).  Witt nets Illinois Juvenile Officer of the Year honors

The village reported that the Illinois Juvenile Officers Association recently selected Mundelein Police officer Rick Witt as its Illinois Juvenile Officer of the Year. Mick Quick, Ssergeant at arms/award committee chair of the Illinois Juvenile Officers Association, cited Witt for dedication to his profession in making significant contributions to juveniles in the Mundelein community. During his 10 years of service with the Mundelein Police Department, Witt has served as the leader of the department’s Explorer Program, Junior Police Academy and Special Olympics Polar Plunge — and most recently as the School Resource Officer for School District 75.

 

GURNEE

 Village, Park Dist. to host annual Families on the Fairway event

The village and the Gurnee Park District will host the annual Families on the Fairway event from 6-8:30 p.m. June 18 at Bittersweet Golf Course, 875 Almond Road. This year’s theme is, “Olympic Style Family Fun.” The event includes access to the driving range, tips from golf pros, a putt-putt course for kids, giant miniature golf, remote-controlled vehicles, a face painter, an ice cream social and a variety of Olympic-inspired games. Food and adult beverages will be available for purchase at the clubhouse. The event is free, and open to the public.  Annual Garden Walk to benefit Riverside Foundation

The village announced that Jo and Penny’s Annual Garden Walk will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 25 and 26, starting at 21110 N. Buffalo Run and continuing at Hawthorn Woods Gardens, 24481 N. Old McHenry Road, Hawthorn Woods. Hosted by Kildeer residents and Master Gardeners Jo Moser and Penny Fulkerson, the community event is intended to benefit the Riverside Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Lincolnshire that provides support for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
